Hello, hello. Thanks for listening to guidance counselor 2.0. Listen, I want to give you a quick rundown of what this podcast is and what you're about to get into as you listen to these episodes. We had guidance counselors in middle school. We had guidance counselors in high school, but we didn't really have guidance counselors in college and now as professionals. We don't really have anybody to turn to to ask a quick question to learn something about the job search or to navigate your career. So that is what I want this podcast to be for you. I want it for it to be a tool for you to navigate the job search and your career.

So that being said, I hope you enjoy this episode and if you need to reach me, tailor at vacovac.com is how to get in touch with me old-fashioned email social media at tdsintdessey. And then finally, please rate and review this in the app store because I want this to be discoverable for others so they can navigate their careers. I hope you enjoy the episode. So I want to give you a few thoughts. So first off, I want to talk about the over hiring that's happened because that is a crazy trend I'm seeing right now. You have the layoffs of Peloton. I've seen a countless other layoffs on my LinkedIn about people getting laid off.

Listen, I called this from the get-go over hiring was happening last year. Now here's the deal. People are still hiring. I want you to know that like the market's not slowing down. People are still hiring, but I think people are going to have to be more intentional. I talked about this last year for the entire year. Be more intentional. Hire with intentionality. People were just given budget and just hiring as much as they feasibly can. And we're seeing that we're seeing that after effects of that unfortunately. And so I will tell you this, if you're a job, if you're an individual that just landed a job recently and you feel it's little chaotic, it's not just you.

This is a problem nationwide. And I just want to advise people that if you are feeling uneasy in your current job to really like be intentional with your hiring manager and those conversations. And if you're just getting, if you don't get the warm and fuzzies and you feel like nothing's going on, listen, there's nothing wrong with you bouncing to another job. Right. I want to say that again. There is nothing wrong with you bouncing to another job. Even if you started a place three months, six months, because here's the deal. Again, the job search is about storytelling. Right. And so if you land a job and you land in this job and it stinks and you don't feel the warm and fuzzies, it's okay to bounce and be like, Hey, listen, you know, I'm going to start looking and just tell the recruiters you start to work with or tell the hiringers like, listen, I took this job at this company.

They promised me this. There's been a lot of overpromising. Right. I don't know if you all have been over promised recently on your job or a previous job. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts, but the overpromising from hiring majors has has to stop because one is lying and two, you're just going to get people leave your organization quicker than if you didn't even overpromise. Right. So companies need companies needs to make sure that they are not overselling being accurate, but also again, pumping up the opportunity. Right. There's a fine line between being hype about your company and the opportunity and then overpromising and that and that developer just being extremely unhappy.

Yes, Kim, Kim chimes in. Yes, if it's not right, you need to leave. Again, I'm giving you listen, listen, you can tell your managers this as well. I'm giving you permission to leave after a few months. If it's not good because it is happening right now, there's no need, especially in this market still. There's no need. There's no need for you to stay at a position that you do not like. There's just no need right now. Now again, but I do want to talk about this. There is a difference. There is a difference of staying at a position and trying to, so there's a difference between jumping to a new position because you got spooked once, you got spooked once, and now you want to leave.

There's a difference. Right. I'm not saying bounce at the first opportunity of conflict or the first presence of conflict or something going wrong. Right. I think we as individuals in today's world, we don't like conflict. I don't like conflict. Right. I've had to have some conflict conversations recently with my work. I don't like conflict. I feel like a lot of people instead of approaching, instead of talking conflict, they just bounce to a new job. Listen, it's not grass is not always greener. Grass is not always greener on the other side. However, if you are dealing with something in your organization that's systemic, that's not going to go away, right, is a terrible manager or hey, you were told I was going to work on dot net azure and you're working on Microsoft Excel.

Those things cannot be fixed. I'm giving you permission to move on. But now I will tell you this. If you do have the first sign of conflict, I'm not giving you permission to bounce at me. I'll try to work through that conflict. Try to have those conversations. But if you have those conversations, conversations will be had, and nothing has happened from those conversations, move on. Barrett comes in lots of over-promising, nothing new, pretty much all companies do it, Sally. Yeah. I mean, let's say I think right now, I think right now, I think gasoline has been thrown on a fire for the last two years because companies are just trying to get talents that they won't say anything.

I'm seeing it more right now. But yes, I would say again, a lot of over-promising for sure. Yeah. To get all the promises and writing, I mean, listen, I think that's a great take. I think if they're if they promise a 90-day raise, let's say they couldn't get you to the sour you wanted, but they're going to do a 90-day kind of evaluation. Make sure you get that writing, right? Let's say after a year, they promised you a certain title, get that in writing. Again, I would get all these things in writing. So LinkedIn user, thank you for that. Let's see here. Is it the really, so another question from LinkedIn user, it's really a job seekers market because if it is, why are the job?

Why are candidates more than two rounds? Why is a job search more than two rounds of interviews? Because companies don't understand, companies don't understand. It is a job seeker market, but companies do not understand. Narando, what's going on? True conflict. Sometimes caused you to grow. I would argue, Narando say it always caused you to grow, but people aren't willing to have that conflict, which is the problem. Dominick, what's going on? I think another thing to keep in mind, listen, you know, so last week, just a little quick refresher for y'all. If you don't follow me on social, so I was in Vaco Cincinnati last week, all last week helping advise them on content creation.

And I had a bunch of sessions with individuals in the Vaco Cincinnati office. And let's I'm going to tell you this, the biggest thing that holds people back is fear. It's just fear, right now I'm talking about posting content, but I'm talking about the job search, right? I want to encourage you today that some of the most amazing things in my career I was scared of. And I just bit the pull it and I did it. Right. So for example, the first thing I was scared of is completely changing my business to complete content based sales, right? So in recruiting, right? And I'm sharing this to you all.

So you know that I have felt scared before and I have felt fear because what happened when when when COVID hit when COVID hit in March of 2020, my entire I had a decision to make. I had a decision to keep doing business the way I've always done business and I send you cold emails. I send you cold LinkedIn DMs. I did that whole thing or I had the opportunity to completely change my entire business and go complete content, right? Full content. You know what? I was scared. I was fearful. I was like, what if I fail? What if this does not work? I am terrified.

I legitimately was I did bail on this. I can't tell you that people in my inner circle, they can tell you how many times I try to talk myself up or talk myself out of it. You know what? I bit the bullet. I overcame my fear and I will tell you this. I have my dream job now. I'm giving content and producing content for you all to apply to the job search. I have my whole entire team around me to help find top engineers across country and because of that, doors have opened with other vehicle offices like Baker Cincinnati. And so I will tell you this.

If you are sitting on the precipice of a decision that you need to make today that you are fearful of, I want to encourage you today. I want to encourage you today to get after it, right? To get after, to get after that decision. Because at the end of the day, if you don't make that decision, you are going to regret it for Russia life. So again, highly encourage that. I also want to talk about job seekers right now, right? We're talking about oh, James, what's up, buddy? Coming in thoughts on tackling fear better to just do it. Don't look back or go slow and try to build up a plan and build up the resume portfolio.

So this is a great question, James. And again, it's great to see you, buddy. I think personally, I think just do it, right? So if we're talking about the job seeker here and we're talking about go slow and try to build up a plan and build up resume portfolio, I've heard that excuse so many times now. It's mainly an excuse. Listen, if you are a very calculated individual, right, I am a very knee jerk person, right? So I took the any gram. I don't know if anybody's taking the any gram. I'm a three, I'm a three, two. Basically what threes are is they act first, feel later, right?

So like I jump into things and sometimes sometimes I get in trouble, right? But the thing is, it's like, it's like Gary V always says Gary Vaynerchuk, he'd rather have 30 things juggling at one time and have 20 of them fall through and still juggling 10 things that succeed than juggling two things in both fail, right? And so I will tell you this, if you're a job seeker, I just jump right in. However, I understand people more calculated than I am, but don't use go slow and try to build up a plan and build a resume portfolio as an excuse to just sit on the sidelines.

I would rather you just jump into it and just get after it. Dominant comes in, fear has definitely hindered a lot of progress, been working on not letting fear deny me potential growth opportunities. Yeah, absolutely. Again, when it comes down to potential growth opportunities, fear is a number one thing that gets in your way. Fear of asking for a raise, fear of asking for a title change, fear of asking for, you know, fear of going out and finding other opportunities. Again, fear is a number one. Again, I sat with, listen, the Vayco Cincinnati office is filled with amazing, amazing individuals, very articulate, a ton of personality.

And they're all incredibly confident. We're all salespeople, I'm incredibly confident about, I'll tell you this, with the door closed in the conference rooms, every single person was scared. The top producers, the top producers in the Vayco Cincinnati office were still scared to post on the internet. We're still scared to put out content because of fear of rejection and fear of other people judging them. And these are the top producers in a sales organization. And I'm telling you that because people struggle with this. It's not just you. And so that's why I have this show. That's what I want to keep talking about this stuff because dominant, like if you know you're not alone, I struggle with fear and issues too.

I don't want you to be alone either. Right. So I'm giving you permission to just go out and kick fear in the ass. I'm just saying that now. Happy Monday. Melinda, Sonny and Crispin Denver. I love it. Elliot eight wing seven. Elliot man, challenger. I love it. Challenger enthusiast. That's my mom's number. Um, Elliot, I'm glad we're friends. I usually don't get along with AIDS that well because it's a consultation. But Elliot, I like you even though I've never met you and we still need to like do dinner if you're ever in the actual area. Um, Leo, what's up buddy? Good morning from Houston. I love it.

My little community in Houston. Kim, love, love the Instagram and high recommend everyone. So again, shout to my guy Kyle Allen. Um, Kyle Allen runs our Nashville office and he has made everybody take the Instagram and I, and I personally think as a leader in an organization, um, you should, everybody should take the Instagram. Everybody should take the Instagram because it allows you to uncover how other people are motivated because listen, some people may not be motivated by you coming on top of them or coming down on them every day. Right. And like, you know, basically trying to micromanage them, not that you should ever micromanage.

But you know, I'm saying kind of more of like that conflict type stuff. Like some people just want to be left alone. Right. And some people were creative, right? Like I have people on my team that way more creative than I am that think differently than I am. And I have to be okay with how they work. And that's okay. I highly recommend everyone take the Instagram employers use fear to their advantage. I would say not everybody, but I do. Yes. Again, I would say, but that thing is the old mindset, Elliot. I think now I think employers can't, uh, and part that fear because, uh, they know people are going to go elsewhere.

Um, yes, hey, listen, listen, LinkedIn user, you're not alone. Me too, um, bear, try public speaking presented an excellent way to confront your fear still terrifies, uh, but it makes me feel better after. Yeah, bear it. I mean, I think that's another thing. So I can't wait to share this information for me. I can't wait to share this round table with you. I sat down with five engineering leads in the Nashville area, brilliant minds, brilliant minds, what it comes to hiring two weeks ago. We sat down for an hour and a half. All the content's going to be shared. It's going to be incredible. Literally probably one of the most dynamic, incredible interviews I've ever had.

I get goosebumps talking about it. I literally one of the women that that was on that panel with me. Um, she literally goes, it was a master class when it comes to hiring and culture in the workplace. So I can't wait to share that with you all. But one of the consensus from that conversation was the more you can present and speak and teach the better of an individual, especially as a developer, you're going to be because if you can explain it to others, if you're going to explain it to others in any very simplistic way, you're going to be more effective with your job as well.

And I will tell you that that is that has been the same with me as well. The more, um, the more, uh, communicative you can be, the more success you're going to have in your job. Um, Elliot becoming a healthier, eight, I was super unhealthy and it hurt me a lot. How much I challenge and buck authority. Hey, Elliot, I appreciate that. I appreciate that openness. I buck authority as well. Um, and so I totally understand that. I'm proud of you. I'm proud of you for, for getting healthier there. Um, Christina, it's great to see you girl. Can't we hang out with you in Vegas in September?

We're going to a guidance counselor 2.0 meetup in Vegas. And I can't wait. Um, but when we do the thing, we are afraid of over and over again, we gain confidence each time. When we do the thing, we are afraid of over and over again, we gain confidence each time. I love that so much. Um, and so as we wrap up here again, I don't want to be this super long, because it's just me today. Um, I do want to talk to the job seekers today and anyone who, um, you know, it's about to, to get on the market. Listen, um, uh, companies are, uh, I'm starting to see companies maybe talk about more on site.

Um, and I will tell you this again, just ask questions. Right. Ask questions, ask about their remote policy, ask about the returns to the office policy. Um, I don't know what y'all are seeing. You know, I'm starting to see Microsoft back on site, Google back on site. Right. I'm, I'm, I'm starting to see stuff on Twitter about certain politicians endorsing coming back on site. I don't know. But at the end of the day, listen, I still think remote work is going to be, um, a main player in the market. Um, I think there probably will be some hybrid stuff. But I mean, listen, if you want fully remote, ask the questions, please ask the questions, because companies are changing their tune a little bit.

Um, so y'all listen, that is all I got today. I appreciate it. Um, I think the big thing I got out of this day is fear. Listen, don't let fear hold you back. That's a little motivational Monday for y'all today. Um, again, want to give one more mention. Go check out render atio. You're not going to regret it. I'm going to be there. Guys, comes two point. I was going to be there. Is a party that hotels freaking nice that just in the same will the render atio. But, um, man, it's just going to be that I'm going to, I'm not going to sleep. I'm basically just not just sleeping five days and I cannot wait.

Um, so y'all, thank you. again for hanging out with me today. Guys, comes with two point. I'll listen one more day. I only have one. I'm on here for two days. I'm heading back. I'm heading up to New York, Wednesday to finish my tattoo. I'm really excited. This is going to be done. Ashley's going to be done. But, uh, listen, tomorrow morning, Dan Diagi, um, from GitHub. Nope. That's with Sam. Uh, Dan is that docu sign. So I had Dan on a few months ago. Um, he's a fantastic mind when he comes to hiring. He will be with me tomorrow morning, not 30 AM Central.

You won't want to miss it. And then like I said, I'll be out Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Um, so y'all come hang with us tomorrow. Let's, let's have that show with Dan via great one. Um, and again, y'all have a great Monday. I appreciate y'all time. You don't take a piece. Hey, you did it. You listened to an entire episode and I am very grateful. Cause you know why there's a lot of podcasts out there. There's a lot of episodes and I myself rarely finish an entire episode. So I appreciate you so, so much for listening. Quick reminder, please rate and review this podcast in the app store.
