Hello, hello. Thanks for listening to Guidance Counselor 2.0. Listen, I want to give you a quick rundown of what this podcast is and what you're about to get into as you listen to these episodes. We had Guidance Counselors in middle school. We had Guidance Counselors in high school, but we didn't really have Guidance Counselors in college and now as professionals, we don't really have anybody to turn to to ask a quick question to learn something about the job search or to navigate your career. And so that is what I want this podcast to be for you. I want it for it to be a tool for you to navigate the job search and your career.
So that being said, I hope you enjoy this episode. And if you need to reach me, social media at T D S and T D E S S E Y N. And finally, please rate and review this in the app store because I want this to be discoverable for others so they can navigate their careers. Hope you enjoy the episode. All right. All right. What's going on everybody? Happy hump day. Hump day. Hopefully y'all are doing well when I say hopefully everybody's doing well. No one's even here yet The way they are here yet. You got to wait till 32 Yeah, exactly exactly so But y'all comment say hey, I'm excited for this episode.
I Was I was thankful to meet John John. It's been how many months now six months five months I think it's been at least six probably closer to seven or eight because I knew you through spin before for officially connected. That's right. So for those of you tuning in, Jonathan just wrapped up his recent job search. So we're gonna talk about it's successes. You know, I think this is gonna be interesting episode as well. When I say interesting, I mean, good, because Jonathan is a senior leader, right? And a lot of people I have on the job search are more like entry level juniors. I have some seniors, but I really haven't talked to leaders when it comes to the job search.
I'm excited to dive in. So for those of you who are tuned in, say, hey, would love to hear from you. For those of you who are wondering what is Guidance Council 2.0, this is the thing I started during COVID, March of 2020, where I just wanted to share information to the IT community across the country. And so that's what this is. And I've been doing this now for three years, and it's kind of, it's grown. It was just me kind of running my mouth for a little bit, and it's definitely, it's grown a little bit. So excited for this. Also ask questions as well with Jonathan.
You know, this is one of the few times where, you know, I can get a leader like Jonathan on the show and he doesn't build you for information and it doesn't build me for information as well. I'm not billing you for this. I thought you got an invoice after this call. John's like, peace, I'm out. Seriously, dude. Yeah, it's just like the Simpsons meme like going into the bushes. So ask questions. Again, say, hey, we'd love to hear from you. Also network, network with people, right? This is the networking platform. I go live every day. Bye, where are you? I can't connect with everybody. Everybody in the chat, everybody who speaks.
Say, hey, be nice. Jump on a unicorn finders. We're at Mother Endeavor, where you connect with all founders and leaders and startups. You're going to have a pretty good network. So that's what I would do if I were you. All right, cool. Enough of me running my mouth. Oh, I need to get some shots. Two partners. that conference. I'm very blessed to keynote this in July, but also they have great coffee and they are the official coffee sponsor of guidance counselor 2.0. So check that out. You can use the code GC2 for a few bucks off your coffee beans. I'm actually serious. It's really really good coffee.
I'm drinking it right now. And then yeah, I want to give some shoutouts to people Becky, Gerald, Mark, Eugene. Hopefully your live was good. My guy I saw you go live and not as good to see you. Chris, Brett, Joe, Paolo, Scott, good to see you, Jeff, good to see you as well. So we got the crew out today. Alright, Jonathan, who are you man? What do you do and then we'll go from there? Well, you kind of summed it up. Senior leadership, I've worked in tech, product, marketing, mostly as a people leader and mentor, broad experience. Next role I get to do some more product work, which I'm excited about.
It'll be a change from the consulting I've been doing since October. But yeah, that's sort of the nuts and bolts. Like you said, network, go look at my page, send me an invite. Yeah, I can connect with anyone happy to help anyone on the hunt. Taylor's talked about it before, but it's something that I took to heart jumping straight in, see the transition. I literally spent most of my time during my job hunting for myself, but connecting others. So for anyone in this chat, I've saw a couple names of folks who I have taken coffee chats with send me an invite. I have thousands of people at my network built from Silicon Valley to Nashville nationwide worldwide.
I probably know someone who I can introduce you to. So let's talk about that for a second. Again, I love how you just dived in. I'm doing my job for me. me. I talk about that a lot, right, where it's like, hey, you know, even if you're not the type of person who like wants to put yourself out there with content or, you know, be it all over social media, you can still be a connector of people in the back end. I mean, talk about, I'm talking about why that's so important and kind of what you've learned. I mean, granted, I don't, your job that you got wasn't from that directly, but can you maybe talk about how that kind of title, like title waved on itself a little bit?
Well, so on that, I'm both. Like, I'm literally everywhere. Every Twitter replacement. Every Twitter replacement that comes up, I stake a flag. Every social network, I have a presence. I probably have, I mean, right now, I've got just your tab open. But usually I've got like 15 tabs spread out, and I bounce between them and check in with folks and do the thing. Yeah. Yeah. So what I would say, easiest thing in the world, like Taylor has mentioned before, like, you know, warm intro, hey, Saw Young guidance counselor 2.0. I'm writing an intro for everyone in chat if they want it. Saw Young guidance counselor 2.0 really enjoyed what you said about pick thing insert here.
Would love to discuss further, you know, tell me something interesting about you. currently I'm blah blah blah looking for making friends seeking connections would love to chat. Yep. Point two and if if you're interested in building your network and finding value and filtering the wheat from the chaff I message every single person as soon as I get a connection request and almost every single person who's connected with me gets something along the lines of hey I really appreciate the outreach, looking forward to learning from you. And I hope I have things I can teach you. If I can ever be of service, please don't hesitate to reach out.
People who respond get attention. Like I've, like I said, I've been doing this 20 years. Right. I'm definitely a little grayer now. Well, I want to talk about that for a second, right? Because again, this is like your, your little grayer, a little wiser, right? My fake. What? Like, I mean, again, you know, people probably look at you like really Jonathan's like on social media and he leveraged to find a job like, like, like, why do I need to be on it? Like, I can do it myself. Can you talk about the aspect of social media and how it really probably turned the job search into a social thing?
thing. Yeah, so that's actually, you know, I hate buzzwords famously, like anyone who's worked with me knows I rail against them constantly, but the one buzzword here that actually does apply is social media is your long lever. You literally cannot, unless you're going to a conference, you cannot put your stuff in front of 10,000 people hitting enter. Like You just can't do it. You you can post on your LinkedIn like the Post that you commented on said hey, I want you to come on talk about this I looked at it just before and I think I'm just north of 12,000 people who have interacted with it Not everyone like did not everyone commented on it But there were a few people who did reach out and say hey, I wanted to talk to you about that I think I'd like six or seven messages about it.
Yeah Every comment I go in and take two seconds. Thank you Interact if someone's really interested or motivated they're gonna reach out. Yeah, and Same thing, you know Taylor's famously on Twitter all the time literally all the time and You know I see a Taylor post and I'm an interact with it and Funny thing I interact with Taylor guess what I get to write his coattails and all the hard work he's doing and that post is going to be seen by thousands and thousands of people and if he interacts with my post it just bumps it again and bumps it again it it's not rocket science it's a game of numbers.
It's a game of numbers talk about man I mean so how long were you on the job search for really? So I'm in a weird situation because I had an agreement with my startup that I knew I was going to be moving on. Okay. So I started a soft search, kind of keeping eyes open, reaching out folks in the network. February 22. Okay. Had five or six conversations from February to October. February 22 or February 23? What year are we in? 23. Yeah, I know. 22. Wow. So but that was just me being kind of forward planning sure October October I Went whole October of 22.
I went whole hog I stepped away from our role. I took on some consulting network stuff. So at least eight months Is that something about right eight months job search give or take eight, but I'm also I Guess uniquely blessed I planned So unlike some folks who you know, I I need a job now, right? You know, I could be a little picky choosy I could take a consult gig and pick up a couple grand to help with the bills sure and extend the search. I really Open applied like me hitting the easy. I want this job. Well, you know easy applies a separate thing I'm gonna be honest with that easy applied and we've talked about it.
That's filled the funnel It's a numbers game and I worked actually you had a monitor earlier Alicia noven. Oh, yeah, I worked with Alicia back and forth probably five revisions using his template of Really? That's awesome. Yeah, since you don't remember that was when you immediately went. Oh my god I love this resume. We need to go have a new we need to go have a milkshake at Shake Shack I'm in town. I just that's awesome. Connect that's even now, but that's the power like You do one thing you put yourself in front of people. I message to Lisa He happened to be a guest on you coming on he was you guys were doing the review.
Yeah, and You immediately went oh my god. I love the senior engineering leader. You told me what you do these are facts This is the experience quantifiable quantifiable. This is brilliant if every resume I had like was like this I would cry every day. I went okay cool connection request send it becomes a no-brainer and That's the part where for this job search You got to do both sides of the coin like Go ahead go ahead. Sorry. Sorry. I was gonna say is the easy apply button you mentioned. Yeah If I fit five of 10, I'm hitting apply. My resume is already stored and linked in.
Maybe I have four or five fields to fill out. One knockout question that I've been in the game long enough. I know how to answer so that I pass. Right. Right. Enter. Bye. I can do five or 600 of those a day. Yeah. That's not even thinking. But jobs that I actually applied to. seven. One a month that triggered one of the safe searches that led to the role I'm going to take on next. That's awesome. Then I want to talk about those safe searches in a second. For sure. I want to get your shots. Few people Dan, my guy. What's up, dude? It's good to see you.
Yeah. Our pal Dan Garrett is good to see you as well. Alex, Alex goes, Hey, I recognize this guy. I remember both of those guys. All right, it's good to see you, buddy. And then, yeah, big Alicia fan here. Very glad to be able to connect with him, a former company. Alicia's the goat. I love that guy. All right, so let's talk about save searches, right? Again, practical, the whole point of this is to try to give really practical, tactical advice to individuals. What does it look like? When you say save searches, what is it? Can you kind of unpack that a little bit? Yeah, so I mean, LinkedIn's really good at some things and really bad at some things.
And one of the UX things that they got really spot on is prompting you to do a safe search. So when you do a search for a specific role, the little slider button, save the search. 90% of the searches I did, it was just curiosity. I wasn't gonna like flip a switch, but you know, 2023 being the year of intentionality. I 100% for the roles I targeted, like senior engineering leadership, senior engineering management, executive searches, product roles I was interested in, operational roles I was interested in. I'd do a search. I'd have one that was narrowed to the national metro, it's where I'm currently reside.
John, where Nashville do you live again? I'm East, out in Mount Juliet. Okay, cool. I'm excited. Just far enough away that we don't have the bustle. Like I have fireflies. It's kind of cool. But long story short on the search, like I'll just take one role as an example. Like if I was looking for a vice president of engineering, I'd do a search for VP event. Okay. I'd set the best search. When you say search, you mean here, you know what? I'm just going to pull up my computer real quick. Yeah. Let's do a safe search for. Yeah. Let's let's. Yeah. I'm gonna present with your hand.
You're leading me back in what I used to be a teacher. I know, I know, let's do it, let's do it. All right. Easy. Okay, so yeah, go up to the job tab. Up here? No job tab. Job tab, yeah, you got a click on job. It's the third day. Thanks. You're welcome. Okay, now up in the top bar, search something, I don't know, let's do a safe search for VACO. So, Vaco, and let's do City as National Metro. Okay, so, well, first off, set alert. That's the slider that if you want to, you can set it, uncheck that for right now. Let's be a little more granular, because realistically, if you're not in the first day, you may as well not.
So, date posted last 24 hours. Yep, and I would agree with that, that's big. Let's say you're a little more senior, so let's go experience level. Don't mark anything. Don't mark anything. Here's why Tailor recruiter you can vouch for this. Yeah job posters suck Yeah, 90% of people who put the job up are not actually gonna fill out those things Accurately, so if you put executive or you put senior It's not it won't come up if you put mid-senior here, you will see director level titles. Yeah. So don't don't check that. Yeah, don't check that. Don't check salary. I know it's there, but I don't.
But the big thing here, all filters, no one checks into this. And this is this is where you start to actually get the real power of a safe search. If you scroll down a little farther, you're gonna see that you can tailor like, Hey, guess what, I'm I'm interested in onsite and hybrid. Okay. So, you know what, I drive a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5.7 Hemi and I get 10 miles to the gallon. Kid do not. I'm not driving more than say 50 miles. So if you uncheck remote and switch it to onsite, I can set it, you know, hey, let's go ahead and set the slider to 50 miles.
That'll give me any role within 50 and then down in the bottom right look there's four results, right? So in the day y'all put up four So go ahead click on that yet or not. Yeah, I'd click on this one what? Where I found my role and this is sort of the cheat code. I I did one that was super, super specific. So I had one that was specifically for the industries I wanted to work in. It was remote, so it was nationwide. But the industries I wanted to work in with the title, I think I had 12 parameters on my search. And when I turned it on, you can go in and you can edit.
Like, do you want a daily digest email as soon as possible. OK. But now that you've saved that, throughout the day, it's going to keep waiting. And I don't know if it's official, like LinkedIn, I'm sure, has it documented somewhere. But I would get a push notification around 8 AM Central Time, 1 PM Central Time, and 50 Central Time. Interesting. OK. So whenever they ran the cron job that was updating, like, hey, new things posted, boom, I would get an alert. So for my new role, the weird part about, like the universe talking to you, I got my 650 post and the role that I wound up reaching out to the job poster and saying like, hey, I had a quick question about this.
I haven't applied, but, and I wrote a decent human message, sent it, it had only posted like maybe five minutes before my alert cycle. So there were zero applicants when I messaged him. It just timing. The question was really specific. It was listed as hybrid and it's out of my market. And it specifically said in the job description, you need to be able to come in two to three days per week. So I said, okay, hey, I had a question about this. Two to three days per week, is that a hard and fast? Because everything else, this is a 10 of 10 role for me.
I would love to apply, but I'm not flying in and out every night. Right. Yeah. And lo and behold, it wasn't a hard and fast. They just wanted to limit. It was a semi knockout question. They wanted to limit the audience. Ah, okay. So long story short, by connecting, I got to ask a couple questions. He had prompted me to say, you know, like, hey, yeah, go ahead and apply. And I had already responded like, yeah, after you answered the first one, I'm so interested in this role, I've already applied, like it's sitting in the hearing box. Yeah, that's awesome. So we had a conversation and one thing led to another and you know, I start Tuesday.
That's so awesome. So the talk about the note. So did you also do notifications on social media to I mean, outside of LinkedIn? Did you set up any notifications at all? Like, sort of yes, sort of yes, sort of know, there were a couple of companies that had popped up that there were roles I interested in that were really few and far between. Like I have some friends who are in the video game industry and there's a new push for engineering leadership that you know has empathy, knows how to lead, can address issues, blah, blah, blah, things that I'm good at. And you know one of them was for a game that I love to play so I would have absolutely been honored to go and work with them.
So I did set an alert for their jobs page on my RSS reader to to say, hey, if this update, send me a push. Sure. So there's other ways that you can sort of not really cheat code your way to the top of the stack. But the earlier you get notified that something you're interested in, the more you're stacking the deck in your odds. Talk about, man, how did you structure at a high level, how did you structure your day, your weeks? I think that's what people have problems with. laid off, you know, maybe I'll sleep in a little bit more. And then it's like, well, then that throws off your schedule.
And then it's like, well, I need to go run an errand. And all of a sudden it's noon and you haven't done anything. Like, can you talk about how you kind of stayed to a schedule as best as you feasibly could? Yeah. So, well, I said it earlier, I'm, I'm on socials. So pretty much every morning, during like the, the super active part of the hunt, I got up, I'm usually up around 4.35 in the morning every day. Actually, usually earlier, but I take my dog for a little run in the morning and then I come back. Before six, I had written a post about something.
Okay. So before six, your social media LinkedIn post. And at a high level, literally about anything. Because whatever I find interesting, Odds of really good 90% of the people reading it Are gonna care less things that I think of as like this is second nature everyone should know this No one freaking knows and they jump all over it It I know Taylor's mentioned it before but I so endorse that statement right about something that You just need to write about it and getting into the habit of writing every day helps Has it helped you? I mean, it helps me tremendously from a speaking, interviewing, getting to the point.
Time. Yeah. So I always tried to push a post out. Sometimes I'd write it between 5.30 and 6 and I'd hit it around 7 a.m. Central because I knew that Central folks were going into office. Right. East Coast folks are already in office. Pacific will wake up in an hour and get ready to go. Yeah, well, depending. I mean, when I worked West Coast in the Valley, I was in the office by 4.15 AM. Wow. Well, because I had to sink with India. So that was 4.45 PM for them. So depending on who your audience is, you will start to notice over days, weeks, months, that there's a cycle to when your audience interacts with your stuff.
For me personally, it was 8 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1.30 on Wednesdays, nothing on Fridays, and Mondays at around 2.33 when people got bored and went for the second cup of coffee. So I tried to post something around then not really to do anything other than just get people noticing me. I love it. There was no ulterior motive for that. It was seriously just get my name into the algorithm, get it displayed. And then if you have the green open to work and you haven't noticed, it does allow you to push the post with their pre-done graphic. And you know, it gets some higher visibility in feet.
So hitting every, I think it's time-gated. I'm gated. I want to say it's every three weeks. I can do that to make that post That was the one post that I would literally spend like two or three days prepping for Everyone's read them, you know, hey, I've been laid off and You haven't always got point. It's either Sobzory about you know, I appreciate the company so much. I learned so much much. I love, I'm an empathetic person. I want to feel your pain too. Shared pain is minimized. We get that. You're hurting yourself badly because that post is going to be promoted. You have the opportunity to grab people's eyes.
Give people permission to help. So every Every time I posted, I would say something to the effect of, hey, I am still on my search. I am a senior people leader, 20 years of experience across product marketing and operations, mainly focused in technology. I'm currently looking for VP of technology, VP of engineering, blah, blah, blah. If you know of anyone in your network or have an opportunity, I would love if you could comment below or send me a message or make an introduction, give people a checklist. Yeah. I can't tell you how many referrals I got because I literally lost track of how many times people in my network said, you know, gosh, it's been so long since we've chatted, so sorry to see your situation.
However, I work for such and such. I just saw that we had an opening on the internal board, would you be interested in me referring? So here's, here's a question. I just popped them ahead. People can look at you now and be like, all right, well, John, this is great. Right. The, the, the job you got was from a notification setting. It wasn't because you introduced people. It wasn't because you make it a post. But talk about why it's all important. Oh, I mean, that's literally it. It is all important. There, there, there is an there. The easiest way to say it, there's no magic bullet.
If there was a magic bullet, every single person who was out of work would have a job. Correct. Correct. And, you know, I've, I can't remember if Taylor said it, but I know of number of other recruiters that I interact with have said it. This is the weirdest job market that anyone in recruiting has ever seen. Buddy of mine and John, you can maybe test this. Buddy of mine, he's, he's a, he's a data engineer. Um, uh, wise, right. was beyond his ears. And he said, you know, he was around for dot com. He was here for 9 11. He was here for 08. And he goes, this is the weirdest job market right now that he's ever seen.
Well, I'm, I am of a similar age. And I can say with absolute certainty. I mean, I graduated university in the year of the dot bomb. I had a valley roll lined up for post grad. And in March of my senior year had my job rescinded. So that led to me actually going off and becoming a teacher for three years and I loved every moment of it. But at the same time, like, yeah, I've seen like what I thought was the worst of the worst. In my adult life, I mean, I'm again lucky I could go out and consult because I have a depth of knowledge of breadth of knowledge in a lot of years experience.
This was the longest I was between formal roles as an adult. I have consulted since 2006 and I've always had sort of, you know, now we call them side hustles. Every company that I've ever worked for has been cool with me consulting as long as I was not competing or working for the enemy. this was the first time I literally went to consulting and went well this is my full-time job now. Okay. Yeah. It's weird. I had I had companies that you know we were at Final Hiring Manager interview and yeah we're gonna schedule and I have no idea where they went. Yeah I know you and I messaged about that a little bit more.
Real quick I want to get to two things real fast as we wrap up here. We got a little distracted with your schedule. I want to rush through that real fast. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh, six a.m. made a post. Then what do you do kind of in the morning time? What was your kind of plan? Nine times out of 10, I just sort of click through my 14 to 16 safe searches. See if I missed anything. If I did miss anything, click click. Move to the next. After that, I would make my lunch. take the dog for other. It's very important. You got to step away from the screen during this.
Yeah, I'd take my dog for another walk. We'd go around the block two or three times. I'd come back at that point. Literally, I'd spend like an hour and just take a break. Like I would from like noon to 1, noon to 1.30, pretty much every day. Shut down. Well, no, I'd still be on the computer. I'd jump on the computer. I'd jump on the computer. whatever other. But that was my time where I could go out and interact and sort of be social. I'm a dad, so during the school year my kids got home at 2.30 and 3.30. Spend some time with them, help with homework.
The computer was always on if I heard a beep, I'd go peak. And then I'd do the regular stuff, cook dinner for the family, do some house stuff, And at night once everyone went back to sleep I'd go and do it again. I checked back on it Did I miss anything? Was there anything important? The last part pretty much every night I'd play video games with friends I love it for like an hour or two, you know, just jump into destiny and go shoot things and That was sort of my little escapism I think it's important. Yeah, it's important. Well, sort of to tie everything together, like, yeah, the job was hard.
And realistically, it will break you. Like you will feel the highest highs of, oh, an offer is coming. And the lowest lows of where did they go? You will feel absolutely hopeless because you've applied to 5,000 roles and had one interview. or had two screenings, or you screen for a role and you thought you nailed it and you get a thank you, we're not going to move forward and blah, blah, blah. I really hate to burst everybody's special bubble, but this is the lesson that helped me through the most. We're all special, which makes none of us special. We don't know what the job hunt is like for anyone else, but at the same time, we also don't know what the hiring manager really needs.
And from talking to hiring managers, being one. Nine times out of 10, we don't know. We could talk to someone and say, wow, this person is like 15 of 10 of what I was looking for. And then we go back and read our notes and we huddle with the rest of the team and go, yeah, you know what? That's not what we need. And we change the parameters of the job and maybe we don't start over, but maybe we move to our fifth choice who only hit two of 10 for the job listing. But they're a 10 of 10 of what we discovered we need.
Yeah. So the biggest lesson I learned was I have zero expectation or entitlement that I'm deserving of a callback I think is a human I am but from a corporate perspective I don't expect anyone to get back to me. I appreciate those to do and I write a very heartfelt personal thank you to every single person who responds to me like a person and then I send a connection request on LinkedIn. But reality is it's business. And moving past the work is your family thing that most Americans have adopted. You know, we're family here. No, it's late stage capitalism and we are all expendable. You know, taking care of your own mental, making sure your mental health does not suffer.
You know, I know we're short on time but like my neighborhood has a fishing pond. It's stocked. It's got small mouth bass and cat in it. I will take a fishing rod out on nice nights. I won't even put a hook on. I'll just put weights and a bobber cast. It is just my peaceful quiet place. It lets me hear the root of that. I love that. And if you're not hitting reset you will grind yourself into dust before you earn the roll and then how do do you expect to do the role once you get her? Sure. And right there, that was so good.
That was so good. Scott, Jonathan, I will answer your question after this in the chat because I have some thoughts too. But at the end of the day, there is some tweaking and adjusting, but we'll answer that. Jonathan, last question. I end this every episode. Guidance counselor 2.0, we had Guidance counselors in middle school, high school and college. But now as adults, you don't really have Guidance counselors that much.
