all right it's going to take a second uh good morning everybody I'm sure you're not here yet when I say everybody me nobody It's gotta take time to hit the interwebs [Music] um see here say hey if you are tuning in right now um by chance hey I'm waiting aside from Paul say hey all right so I just saw that was that was really fast going on LinkedIn so we are good there and waiting for it to hit things waiting waiting all right we let's go ahead and get started at least I want check I want to check LinkedIn one more time all right sweet

we're good all right let's get all right let's get wrong yo Ryan what's up dude here we go all right as long as I get a comment we're good to go Ryan it's good to see you good good morning everybody happy Tuesday excited for this episode because we're gonna talk about hot air balloons no I'm just kidding um or what was that Festival what did you say hot air balloon festival Al Kirk New Mexico there you go surprise this is where this is the entire 30 minutes talking hot air balloons no um but excited to hang out with Paul today I've known Paul for a

very long time had the pleasure to meet him I think the through the net User Group years ago and we've stayed in touch and Paul's done a lot of work he he's helped me throughout my career um uh he actually wrote some coding evals for for me at my last company to help help screen out developers so excited hang out with Paul today Paul DM me goes yo I want to come on the show I said yeah absolutely we need to make it happen you know it's funny that the people I always tell people I said if I don't invite you on the show doesn't

mean I don't like you a lot of times it's because the people who I know the most I don't think about it so I'm really glad when people like Paul slide in my DMs go yo let's get on the show I said absolutely so excited to talk today this is the last episode uh of the week I'm headed to New York tomorrow for baby moon um our baby number two is America Day July 4th so we'r e getting to New York tomorrow um and uh and for those of you who have DM me while I would love to hang out with you my wife doesn't

love when I turn a personal trip in a work trip so I won't be doing any meetups I've had some DMS about meetups and drinks and dinners and stuff like I love New York I love you I'll come back up for work but um I need to we need to do family family time this time so I'm excited about that excited hang out with Paul uh a few housekeeping things first off say hey we love to hear from you um this is a networking platform um I've realized in the last six to nine months that that's what that's what this is that's what I want

it to be but you got to show up consistently and you got to say hey we're not in the metaverse yet we're not watching with our Apple Vision Pro goggles on yet however that'd be pretty sweet so until then I need you to comment say hey engage um again I've had people find Mentor mentors on this show I have had one person find a job on this show um because they were interacting with the manager and the DMS and then some side conversations then two months later a job came open and they got hired right so again comment there are people watching also too I

want to create a vehicle and we can talk about this Paul too on how to network right so like if I were you and you stayed I've been doing this for four years now I've been doing this podcast for four years if you have stayed with me through four years and you networked with every speaker I've had on just shoot them a DM say hey is great to on guidance CER 2.0 keep up with them if you dm'd every single person that that has been in the Chats on every single show you would have a very vast Network and that is what I want for

you I want to build help you build a community because networking is weird and it's awkward and I want to be that guy at a party that says hey Paul you should talk to Ryan and then I'm Gonna Leave y'all alone and I'm gonna go away I'm gonna go hide in the corner eat some snacks right and pet some dogs so uh do that please say hey we love to hear from you uh also ask questions Paul is a wealth of knowledge uh and this is the one time where he won't bill you for it so um please ask some questions uh it'll be it'll

be a good time again Chris it's good to see you um give a shout out to two of my sponsors this morning first and foremost that conference um so I spoke I actually keynoted that conference Wisconsin last year it was an amazing event I have three three tickets to still give away I've given away two have three to still give away free tickets um they're not with the food they're just the general tickets now I won't buy your travel but if you want to get to that conference and you want to pack some heavy snacks and you want to go to the conference for free

shoot me DM we love to hook you up with that um as courtesy from that conference but again an amazing event also want to give a shout out to render ATL conference in Atlanta June 12 through 14 think South by Southwest but in Atlanta is a crazy Tech event I C the Grammys of of the tech world uh because everybody's there um in Tech and so you should be there too render ail again thank you for sponsoring the Pod as always um again Jordan it's good to see you buddy as well all right Paul enough of me running my mouth Paul sitting there going when

the hell am I gonna talk Paul let's get what they want who are you what do you do uh and I'll start asking you questions all right so thanks for everybody for joining today my name is Paul Sheriff I've been in the industry since 1986 and uh so it's a long time and uh owned my own software company for 27 years sold that in 2017 and uh just now I'm really focusing on mentoring people and I do a lot of work with the local high school students down here in Franklin Tennessee um I have a couple of college students that I Mentor um some have

gone on already and kind of graduated and got onto their dream job which is so satisfying and then I still do a little Consulting here and there and I still write for code magazine I am on plural site I have a YouTube Channel lots of free stuff up there I'm adding stuff all the time around C and I'm going to start doing some HTML stuff and I've got minimal web API so that's me in a nutshell I love that I love that I love that so a lot talk about and again for those of you tuning in now in the future list this on the

Pod when we release it um we kind of do it backwards live is first and then the Pod is obviously again if if you did not know all of these recordings are audio on Spotify actually I think we're at I'm going to check it real quick we are at what are we at I think episode 3 like 356 episode 356 so go check that out um so Paul a lot of things talk about first off I want to just dive into something that's not being talked a lot about right now and that is having a savings account now listen this is not Financial advice I

I'm I'm facilitating this conversation here uh I could do better about savings trust me we're about to go to New York my savings account is shivering in its boots right now but I think it's something that's important right now that no one's talking about so Paul as a consultant as somebody who has been very successful in his career what are your initial thoughts on saves accounts especially with this market right now the Way It Is Well you know the market irregardless because depending on how old you are you have time right so to me there's a lot of rules that people put out there these

Financial guys and you should you should check into some financial plan if you'd haven't done it yet okay it is highly useful yes I've been doing it since I was 27 and I started way back when but I had a rule of thumb where I put I made sure I could always live on 50% of my salary y 30% then went into investing and savings long-term and then I had another 10% that I put in for an emergency fund and then the last 10% it was basically fun stuff rig ht those are my my wants yeah the things that I would use to travel or

whatever um unfortunately what I see too often is people living beyond their means yeah all right so you have to figure out you know do you really need that new C do you really need to keep up with the Joneses and if you haven't read it there's a great book it's an old book but it's been around forever it's called The Millionaire Next Door yeah okay where the guy living you're in this big mansion right next to you there's this little dinky house that guy probably has more money than the guy in the big mansion why because he is stayed Frugal not cheap Frugal yeah

and you know that's that's something and I I have always been a big believer in Saving saving saving and that's it's done wonders for me I we were talking about this beforehand I was able to retire at 54 crazy okay I'm now 60 I still work because I love to work sure I love what I do I'm still a geek you know um but to me the reason why I was able to do that is because I started when I was young and I you know Diversified made wise choices just like everybody always says to do so very important in my book to to get

that savings going and that investing going yeah absolutely and listen like I so I've actually had my financial adviser on the show his name is Steve Alverson he helps everybody all over the country I listen I I will this isn't he's not paying me to say this I would recommend at least seeing him and if you want his information shoot me a DM I will give you his information he has helped a lot of my friends he's helped even my parents um but I will tell you this like my wife and I a few years ago we thought we were doing great and we got

to a certain point and we were kind of like well what's next like financially what's how do we take that next step what are some goals and so even if you're like I don't have a financial adviser first off DM me I will help you connect with my guy Steve but I would also recommend it even if it's ju st a lot of these guys will just take a meeting just to set up some preliminary stuff like my guy Steve like he didn't take any money from me he was just like let's sit down let's let's let's do some goals yada y y and he's

allowed us to put a framework in place of things that I never knew about um and so I didn't know if you had any more thoughts on on a financial advisor financial planner type situation yeah that's great and as long as you go see somebody whether it's your person you know mind just see somebody exactly I mean I you know I started with Edward Jones years and years and years ago and they've been wonderful a great G ion she's actually in Tustin California there you go okay so I'm in Tennessee but it doesn't matter where they're at what matters is that they come up with

a plan for you just like you had done so but you gota do that plan and then stick to the plan yeah absolutely and that's the hard part that's the hard part so I wantan to and again I don't want to get to nuts and bolts but if if if let me ask you this and and maybe I can answer after you too if there is one thing if somebody's watching this or listen this now or in the future and goes listen I'm struggling want the savings account what's one simple thing that I could do to start saving or start monitoring everything what would you

say you know what I did years and years ago that is now this was it was a lot easier back in the 30s no I'm just kidding I know yeah I'm an old guy what can I say um but you know I mean back when we used cash a lot yeah I would always pay with dollar bills $5 bills $10 bills and whatever change I got back in I would take that change and I put it into a bucket yeah and then I would go take that change bucket to the bank and I would you know cash it in and there's $400 that I had

you know in in from a few months yeah just a change and then I took that and put it into the savings okay now if you look at your bank most banks will have a thing where when you pay a bill or whatever you can round up and they'll they'll actually charge you know let's say your bill came in it was you know $20.15 they'll always charge you 20 but they're not charging you they're taking that extra money and they're moving it into a savings account for you automatically I didn't know that a lot of places will do that look that that's interesting I love

that love that and credit cards I think you know you might check into I'm not sure if they still do it but I'm pretty sure banks will still I've seen some credit cards or apps or something that that does that as well so yeah I I love that idea also you know one of the biggest things you can do if you're at a place a work okay if you're at work and they have a 401k do that because then it's coming right out of your paycheck yes and it's going right into you know to make sure they're investing it wisely and again that's where you

need a financial planner to help right 100% yeah yeah so those are the things that I would recommend I love that yeah and and I love this Jordan yeah hit me up I'll definitely make connection if you need it um also to what I would do I'm a big fan of co-pilot and no not the GitHub co-pilot the financial app co-pilot so I have it pulled up right now I'm not going to share my screen because you don't need to see how much money I'm spending right now but uh basically um this this um this app co-pilot is fantastic I have I've tried mint um

I know it closed down um I think they shut it quick and loow and shut it down but mint was a great tool but copilot's the best tool I have a referral code which gets me like a month free and I I think gets you a month free so like send me a DM I again this isn't a paid ad I just really like it I've always struggled kind of keeping up with expenses from the credit card and your personal expenses and so this this piece of software um is fantastic um and they do a great job it's very easy to use I can figure

it out um so highly recommend it all righ t cool it just matters that you do something you have some tool it doesn't matter what tool it doesn't matter who you use to figure out these things you know I'd be even happy to talk to people offline and you know give you I have a spreadsheet that I've been using for years that breaks down kind of where everything should go so yeah you know what I'll try to get that up on my GitHub cool love it love it love it um so so let's kind of Move On Again Paul kind of talking about kind of

some highlevel stuff today um which is where which is what I love to be honest um you know I I do get in the Weeds on this show with a lot of tactical stuff but it's sometimes nice kind of getting out of the weeds and talking super high level so Paul I want to talk about overall like being healthy right I I think you know what you know one of the things that you kind of sent me I was like hey what do you want to talk about you said be healthy physically and mentally in 20124 um I did my Vlog yesterday and and my

2024 goals was physical mental and spiritual health in 2024 right and I kind of did a checkin and some things I'm doing well some things I'm not doing well um but one of the things is that I'm really trying to take control of is my physical health right and I'm not saying be jacked I'm not saying have a six-pack but just waking up and feeling good is is is a big goal of mine this year so talk about man the role physical and mental health that's played within your career well I agree with you um you know when I was working because I hey I

own my own business so I'm sorry you know I was working 60 80 hours a week yeah and was not good for me okay um and that's one of the reasons why I finally had to give it up after you know 30 years of doing that I it had taken a toll on me but in the last you know few or actually the last several years years I've really made an effort to you know make sure I walk every single day I mean we do three to four miles a day and we also you know every o ther day we do weights okay just light

I'm not trust me I don't have a you know a great body but you know I'm at least and we eat healthy those are the to me the major things that you can do I also like that you mentioned you know uh mental health okay seeing a good counselor yes and it doesn't you know there I'm sorry there's no Stigma about about seeing a counselor listen to a podcast yesterday or the day before no I was weed eating for four hours on Sunday on my property and it was one of the things they said whoever is who said the one thing this generation has done

so well the Millennials is to destigmatize Y counseling and therapy absolutely and you should I mean and it doesn't have to be maybe a formal counselor just have a mentor or someone that you can talk to about things that are going on with you that might be able to help yes okay um you know and I'm I mean obviously I do that with my students you know that I that I Mentor because they come to me even when I'm not there and they say hey Paul I'm having trouble with this what should I do and then we try to come up with something that works

for them yeah you know because everybody's situation is different but I love that if you can just get out and walk and I'll tell you boy it does wonders try to do it in the middle of the day because just getting up and going yes come back and your problem that you were having right before you got up was like I just figured it out so that I'm so glad you brought that up um because so I've been really struggling I like I go really hard I mean like my mom asked I talk called my mom last night she goes do you think you're ever

ever stop running this hot and I was like I don't know I said I think it's just ingrained in me but one of the things that I've really tried to do I've been trying to figure out how to balance my brain mush like brain mush for me is real real like I am dialed in between 5:00 a.m.

and noon and then all of a sudden man like I start to like fall apart a nd so one thing and and props to Tasia my CEO at gun iio um and also my wife for supporting me like like my my CEO was like dude go work out during the day he goes I don't care he goes I want you to be healthy he goes you already do a lot he goes your work is never in question he was like have some time for yourself so basically I lately I haven't because work's been crazy with travel and stuff but from 12 to two I take

off good and I go work out and I grab a quick lunch and then from two: to 5: I'm you know strapped in again and that's really helped my mental Clarity I bet and you know again you may not be able to afford two hours in the afternoon your boss may not let you but come on everybody should get at least an hour for lunch you can eat lunch in 15 minutes and then have 45 minutes just go take a nice long walk you know or do some light weights or something and again you know maybe you have to get up a little bit earlier

in the day to make sure that that happens then do that yeah but yes you have to FOC it has to be something that you're focused on and and trust me I've got a lot of aches and pains now and I'm only 60 and so you look great like like to be honest with you like you look great you really really do I'm not saying that because you're live you do look great no I appreciate that I mean actually but you know what a lot of people have actually people have known me for years have also said Paul you look so good these days you

know I have lost weight you know part of it is I'm happy okay and that's a big thing why am I happy because I'm doing what I love to do and that's another thing that I always like to tell people I say you may be in a great job okay that pays you a lot of money but if you're working with people that are making you sad or you know not keeping your happiness level there find another job okay yes it's hard to find a job but the best time to be looking for a job is when you have a job don't wait until you

get laid off yeah 100% I I thi nk so one of the things that my nutrition so I hired a nutritionist um who's also helping me with my workout programming and I go to a PT person and one thing my nutritionist told me when I started on the journey with her is if you say that you don't have time to work out is the is really when you need to work out the most yeah absolutely I was like oh that's good but also very convicting um and so like and again I mean another thing too that she's really big on is get just getting steps

in so you know again I'm not a health nerd by any means but I've listened to some stuff and they talk about the blue zones like Sardinia and like basically people overseas by the coast that are in this Blue Zone where there's like a lot of light sunlight like 80% of the year they're always out and walking they live to be over hundred years old yep and a lot of it is just active movement again 2,000 steps is a mile yeah and it's recommended I don't know who to get 10,000 steps in in a day well you look at like the oldtime actors that had

stayed around for years and years like Dick Van djk he's like what 90 something years old okay he's probably coming up on a 100 crazy and people ask him what's the key he says I never stop moving yes you know and that was in Nashville they have the Nashville you know like 5K downtown there were four generations and the LA the the the old grandma was a walker and doing the 5K and people asked her what's your secret because she was like 90 some years old she said I'd never stop moving when you stop moving that is when you start dying yeah absolutely and so

again if if you're watching this I mean Jordan like I like I know you have a young kid at home it's hard to get away you know one thing my wife and I did with our first kid when we couldn't really work out because we were just trying to survive the first you know three to six months is we just went for a long walk with with with the stroller and just get your steps him so I love that um I do want to kind of go into um I didn't know if you had any more thoughts on that um before we move on no

go ahead all right um so I I want to talk about just I I do want to go to you know you've been a consultant um you know and and you've definitely had to do this on your own this isn't quite something that you kind of sent me originally but I want to talk about just the active networking the act of getting business as a consultant as a freelancer how do you do it um what's your advice to others give me kind of a high level on that perspective to me it's really simple somebody gave me advice when I was first starting out they said

Paul if you really want to get business and you want to you know be successful you have to network and I'm like well how do I do that they say get out of your comfort zone which means you you know a lot of us programmers boy we love just sitting in front of this keyboard and we don't like to interact a lot okay but you have to you got to get out of that comfort zone go to a user group meeting come on to these types of shows and comment and interact but user groups are fantastic especially when they're in person because you're getting out

doing something different than your normal dayto day okay um another thing charity work go out to a charity okay and volunteer your time do you know how many people that are CEOs and CX any cxo level a lot of them do charity work so you're sitting there loading in groceries into somebody's car at a food bank okay the guy next to you owns a company and he needs help doing something trust me I have found so many people like that okay another way speak write okay people told me they said hey you be become an expert in something I said how do you become an

expert write about it speak about it because when you have to explain something to someone else it forces you to learn that topic really well and you end up becoming an expert and because you wrote about it and it was published or because you're up in front of a group you become an instant expert and then people come to you because they say I'm having that problem can I hire you to help me yeah yeah yeah I mean I talk about that a lot I think the easiest form of networking is going through not pain that's terrible way to say it but like going through

a shared experience with one another so like college if somebody messages me and they went to South Carolina I'm going to respond back to them because we have that similar thing Jackie and I were just at 30A at the last week and we overheard a table and they're like oh my God we're from Franklin Tennessee and oh my gosh we're from Hendersonville like oh my gosh we're from H we don't know these people but we're like oh my gosh and so there's just kind of this thing I'm sure there's like a there I'm sure there's a phenomenon that about it but like going through something

with other people is incredibly powerful and and the whole Meetup thing like like with Paul like I met Paul at the doet meter group years ago right we stayed in touch so it's it's so incredibly important to obviously get you out um the Meetup but the meetup.com right I mean you can go out and do hikes with people you know that's how you meet people when I first moved here to Nashville because I moved here in 2015 yeah okay that's how I met my whole group of friends was out hiking all right so you have to get out get out of your comfort zone and

do something else it's good for your mind it's good for your body right and it'll also Network so these are people that are outside your normal stream of things and that's where you're going to find people that you'll you'll me I've met so many Tech nerds that play Ice Hockey it's wild oh yeah yeah but anything plus it gives you another activity that you're doing that's not just sitting in programming I mean yeah we love programming you know to me it's great I I I have fun with it but I make sure I have a lot of other hobbies and I'll tell you why that's

important it may not se em important right now but as you get older okay unfortunately I've had a lot of my friends pass away in the last couple years and it's been tough when I looked at where they were in life they didn't have anything else to do when they retired and those are the people that go downhill fast yes okay you have to have something else that's going to stimulate your brain so when you finally say you know what I'm done working I I've had enough I've got enough money I can retire what are you going to do with yourself yes if you take

the time now to Branch out and try different things and try something you don't you may not even think you like okay I'm gonna go fencing try that I'm gonna do curling yeah do some do something different you may find wow that's neat or it may lead you on to something else and these are the kind of things that will keep you vibrant and healthy y absolutely absolutely um we had a few comments come in that I think the walking really hit a nerve um you know Stephen comes in Walking is great I love watching soccer so when it's nice out I try to listen

to walk I love that uh Jordan comes in honestly we're trying to incorporate more walks like that with the baby um Jordan new baby right mine hated it when we walked she took a look at once we flipped her around she loved it um Eugene it's good to see you thanks again for tuning in um Kenneth comes here I have a have a lot of chronic pain from injuries to my back and saying active and walks have helped tremendously 100% totally agree um and then Jordan goes if you want to challenge yourself local 5K and short trath long communities are some of the most accepting

encouraging people love that love that as well definitely um so I want to as we kind of wrap up here and again time flies man when you're having fun with friends we can go for an hour here know I know I know so talk about I I I want to ask you just some general just advice right now for job Seekers right I mean I mean you've gone through years of Consulting and freelancing which is the hardest part um you know you know I'm sure you've gone through some downtimes 08 before that um 01 um just talk about how to be resilient right now in

this market well to me to be resilient you've got to be out there constantly learning you know learning new things um sometimes as programmers we do get pigeon hold into our language right and our way of doing things you need to Branch out a little bit more because the more skills that you have that opens your job opportunities right I mean not everybody maybe is using net in your area okay we'll learn JavaScript and HTML or maybe angular or react and learn how to do those you can do those part-time and at least build enough skills at you at least be able to get your

foot in the door yeah that to me is making sure again that you're a well-rounded person also what goes along with that is make sure you're a very good communicator all right um when I used to I used to do these interviews for PE for this company large company and I probably did I don't know hund 10020 interviews over the course of a year for them to hire people or a couple years yeah and when these people and I'd call them up on the phone or if we were doing this type of thing I said hi I'm Paul Sheriff I'm with you know whatever they're

like hi doesn't cut it right there that's a thing against hi my name is and I have been doing this for this long or something you've got to be a communicator you need to learn those communication skills every email that goes out from you should have your fullone name phone and email address yes it just came from that email address but trust me they're going to copy and paste this to somewhere else always your name your phone and your email should be in every single email you do when you talk on the phone you answer your phone hello this is your name don't just answer

hello you got to be upbeat every time you answer the phone yes also when you're talking or leaving a message for som eone hi my name is Paul sheriff and my number is 55566 don't you hate that hi my name is Paul Sheriff my number is very slow and clearly yes so those are some things that if you can get those things down they are going to just set you apart from those other people that aren't doing that yes yeah I I I I love that I think I think public speaking is and when I say public speaking I hate that term because people think

getting up and and speaking but like just being conversational and being confident and concise man has taken me very far in my career especially somebody like me who had a stuttering problem I mean I had major speech impediments when I was younger couldn't pronounce his L's THS r i mean trying to pronounce my name back in the day was brutal so like again I mean it it it's it's huge and is a huge unlock especially in today's world because I will tell you this the the really kind I mean everybody kind of has the same same Tech skills in a way right everybody has the

same access to the same information everybody can kind of do the same thing it's it's those communication skills and that engagement that really kind of sets you over the top so I love that AB love that yeah I started speaking 35 years ago you know haven't popped so yeah well and I think again going to this Cadence and kind of being slow it's something I have to to work on in certain situations because a lot of times I can talk really fast um but I also know like if I'm on the phone or talking in um I don't know in some in some s of

Ty of conversation where it doesn't need to be fast talking the slower the more spaces like you know and again we can go I mean this a whole another conversation but like negotiations letting time letting time for your conversation to breathe like if you say something just pause right yep because people AR comfortable with the paws so and something you can learn that is definitely something you can learn there are you know Toast Masters there's other types of organiz ations where you can learn to be a better speaker you know what you can do simply make your own recordings and listen to yourself back yeah

you'll find what you like and what you don't like and then you try it again yep great simple way to do it without having to start out in front of people yeah absolutely Jordan comes in here best communication exercise in Tech is explaining to your work to your non-tech spouse listen I I attribute a lot of My Success to my mother because I mom you're probably not gonna watch all the way end this that's okay I love you to death but trying to explain technical things to my mother is very challenging and so my brother and I my brother is a fantastic product owner and

he's a very good marketer we're and we've kind of learned that both of us are really good marketers and brand my brother and I have talked about it's because we grew up trying to explain things to my mother in a way where she could understand so the way I approach conversations is I need my 62y old mother to understand what I'm talking about yeah and if you can approach every conversation with that mindset you're G to be very clear and very articulate um all right Paul that was fun four questions rapid fire as we wrap up here and again for for for those for people
