Good morning, internet. It's been a minute. We need to catch up. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. It's good to see y'all. Well, no one's here yet. I'm going to drop in the Discord. It's been so long since I've gone live that like everything is logged out. So, it's been it's been a challenge this morning to get going, but good morning. Excited to be back live, but it's funny. Back on the road tomorrow. We're going to do a little catch up to today's going to be kind of a little bit of a hodge podge episode if we're just being totally honest. I'm going to talk about how to use AI to navigate uh job offers, but I'm also going to catch you up on all the happenings that's been going on with the uh torque community.
It's been a lot. It's been a lot. So, uh, let's see here. I'm going to go and drop it in the Torque Discord. Let's see here. [sighs] Alrighty. All right. So, it's been a minute. Um, for those of you who God, how long has it been since I've gone live? Let me see here. Let me see here. Uh, one, two, three. It's been four weeks. Holy cow. That's crazy. It's been four weeks since I've gone live. That is crazy. Richie, good morning. So, yeah, it's it's uh it's good to be with y'all this morning. It's good to be with y'all this morning. Um, so much going on.
So much has happened. And I do want to give you a quick rundown just kind of an intro and then we'll get into the to the prep. But I want to give you kind of an overview of what's been going on with the with the Torque community and kind of what we've been building, what we've been doing. Um, but if you are tuning in for the first time in a while, welcome. Um, I've been working through a series on how to use AI in the job search. Um, and this is week six. Um the I if you want to go back both the all the streams are on the Torque YouTube as well as my YouTube.
Um so feel free to go check those out. Um but uh a lot of good information. 67 years. Yeah. 67 baby. 67. I have a funny story. So I'm a little dyslexic, like not diagnosed, but I think my daughter has it too. She kind of writes backwards. Um and so she was going around the house the other day going 76 76. I said, "Man, that dyslexia is working overtime right now." Um, so, uh, yeah. So, six week series or eightweek series. So, the first week, just to just to recap for those of you tuning in for the first time, the first week was use claw to figure out the job you actually want.
Um, week two was build your target company hit list. Uh, week three was a live resume rewrite. Uh, week four was a live LinkedIn rewrite. Um, week five, uh, which was four weeks ago, was writing cold DMs and cover letters. Um, and then today, uh, we are going to get into, um, Oh, no, no, no. We've already done week six. I'm sorry. Week six was the last time I went live, and that was a mock interview on stream. That was crazy. I got absolutely roasted. Um, so, highly recommend, uh, checking that out. Um, and then today's week seven, so, negotiate your offer live, research, counter, roleplay.
Uh, we'll get into that today. But um before we uh before we dive in, please say hey. We'd love to hear from you. Um some a few announcements here, uh yeah, I know Jeff, it's been so long. It's so good to see y'all. Amelia, it's great to see you. Um so, uh we are heading the the the community team's back on the road tomorrow. We [clears throat] are in conference season right now. We are headed to commit your code. Um Roxy, our very own is speaking. We have a lot of our ambassadors speaking at commit your code. Um, so shout out to all of our ambassadors speaking.
Uh, commit your code. Um, and uh, it's going to be a great event. We are hosting a meetup. It it is at capacity. Um, and uh, I'm going to be honest with y'all, like let's just peel behind the onion. Like we made a boo boo. We we have to stop underestimating how many people show up. Uh, we booked the venue for like 30 or 40 people and there's 150 people confirmed. So if you are if you see this between now and tomorrow uh I would make sure savah that's my little bit of French. That was it. That's all I got. Um so [clears throat] uh so if you are just if you are going to the commit your code meet up that we're doing get there early.
Uh it's going to be nutty. Um I may have to work the door, right? We may have to like let some people in when people leave. So, we'll figure that out. Um, but, uh, but yeah, so tomorrow, commit your code. We're on the road. Um, I'm leaving a little early. Um, and, uh, I'm leaving first thing in the morning. Uh, 3:30 a.m. wake up. I'm going to be going golfing with my buddy Ben Pile, who's the CTO in Dallas. It's going to be a great time. Going to take you along for that, of course, as always with the vlog. Um, and so, uh, yeah. So, let's kind of recap first off.
Let's see here. Uh, uh, before this is kind of a quick recap of what's going on. Uh so the last so uh I spoke the last time I did a live I spoke at all things open in Raleigh. Shout out to our ambassador team uh for showing up and helping specifically um Pat Clark um Christopher Scott um and Robert Cameron. Uh those guys were working our booth. They were uh selling us. Uh you know it's really cool, right? I mean again like you know you know I really the way I treat our ambassadors is they are an extension of the community team right uh they don't get paid they get paid in swag and other gifts um but uh yeah I don't it was just really cool it was just awesome like hearing Robert Chris and Pat Clark just kind of talking about the community you know I was kind of yapping with some people on the side and just hearing them kind of just the excitement that that came out of their their their mouths um when when when they yapping about the community um was just super special.
So, shout out to those guys. The event was great. Um I did actually just get the full recording of my talk and our panel. We're going to put it on the Torque YouTube. Uh it's going to be a good one. It's it's it's really good actually. Um Todd Lewis, uh who is the um founder of All Things Open, um he actually got up on stage and he specifically said it was uh one of the top three panels he's ever been a part of. Um, so, uh, so that is going to drop here soon once I can get it out, uh, with with everything we got going on right now.
Um, so that was amazing. Uh, 225 people were there. It was completely packed out, standing room only. Um, just a heck of event. Had a lot of people come up to me afterwards talking about how they can get involved, etc., etc. So, it's been it was great. Um, next thing. Uh, so, so we did that. So, that was kind of an overnight thing. Um, and then here I'm just kind of going through my calendar to catch you all up. It's been a minute since we since we hung out. Then Render, right? Render ATL. Shout out to our ambassadors. Um, Sebastian, uh, Briana, drop in the chat all the ambassadors who helped.
Michael, um, Sebastian, uh, a few other people helped, too. I'm I'm I'm blanking on names. U, but again, shout out to our ambassadors, right? Showing up, working the booth, right? Um, it was incredible event. The head shot, uh, went over very well. Um, I've seen a lot of folks, um, drop their head shot on LinkedIn. It looks great. I have mine, but I'm going to stick with the solid color like always, but um it was a crazy awesome event. Uh IMC, uh stage four at Render ATL. My jokes started to land there at the end. It was a little rough crowd in the beginning. Had to kind of perfect my jokes.
Um and uh you know, we hosted our uh our our tour community meetup at Broad Street Barbecue. I'm going to say this. If if if you're in Atlanta, like listen, I don't my hot take here is I don't think Nashville uh has great barbecue. Um I posted about it. I did definitely got some comments like where are you eating? Um but I will say this. Yes, Lucas, Michael, Sebastian, uh Ken, thank you. Yeah. All Yeah. Amazing. Amazing. Um think of all the money you're saving on AI tools, not buying hair gel. Appreciate you, Jason. Thank you. Appreciate it. Uh I do like the shortcut. I do like I'm stick with the shortcut.
Um, so yeah, uh, it was amazing. Broad Street Barbecue, if you're in Atlanta, like, shout out Broad Street Barbecue. That was some of the best barbecue I've had in a very long time. Um, shout out to the folks came out. We had about 50 folks kind of come through the door. Um, some at some way, shape, or form. It was great. Uh, you know, a lot of folks, new members to our community. Shout out Roxy. So again, kind of the lore of Render was that the tattoos uh you know that that the ambassador team got two years ago or last year, all the years run together at this point.
And um and so we're giving out we giving out fake tattoos. We'll have fake tattoos at commit your code. I'm going to go back with the neck tattoo. My wife got a little nervous by the way. Fun little fact. I got home and it was still on. She was like, "Are you sure that is fake?" I said, "Yes, it is fake. I promise." She was like, "I was terrified you got actually a neck tattoo for a second." Um, and so, uh, that was great. Uh, render was great. Excitement was through the roof, kind of what we're building, um, as always. Uh, and then we had a week off.
Um, which was which was nice. Um, and then or two weeks off and then we were, yeah, a week off and then we were back on the road. Um, yeah. So, I'm recapping the Sunnyville event now. I mean, Bentonville and Sunnyville was great. I mean, listen, at the end of the day, like we're doing an activation for a big client. you could probably figure out who it is, but there's a lot of opportunity in Sunnyvale in general. Um, and it was it was it was amazing. It really was. Like I I've I've tweeted about this. I've wrote about this. Like I understand. And by the way, we're going to get to this AI thing in a second.
I just want to recap kind of everything we've been doing. Um, but like it was really cool. So Bentonville, great spot. Shout out to Briana and Fur on our team, our kind of our event specialists, you could say, picking out just an absolute vibe spot. We had like a downstairs basement type room. Um, uh, great shakuderie board, great food. The burger was insane. Um, but it was just awesome, right? Like we were chatting to people like Bentonville small, right? Bentville Small. We had we had two groups of people drive uh 2 and 1/2 hours and 3 and 1/2 hours to the event. Now listen, like I don't take this for granted.
Like that is insane. That is absolutely insane. Um uh I we're I am super grateful for those folks that that drove down. Um it was uh you know, gas is expensive. Um, you know, people have lives and the fact that those individuals are a total group of about six or seven folks took the time to get in their cars and drive down to one of our events, like that is special, right? There's not many SAS companies that throw a meet up and you got people driving two and a half, three and a half hours for for for a meetup. So, um, it was great. And then we got on a plane the next day and then we headed out to Sunnyvil.
Sunnyale was awesome. Jared, I hate we missed you, too. Um, uh, I was in the city for another event dog fooding my product. Hey, we love that, man. We love that. You got do what you got to do. So, Sunnyale was great. I tell you what, that whole area, like San Jose, Sunnyvale, it's gorgeous. One of my uh personal friends who I played hockey with lives out there, and literally, I saw him two years ago, and when I got off the flight in the uh uh uh and in the airport, it was the exact same temperature, the exact same clear skies. I was like, does it ever change out here?
It's It's amazing. So, uh it was great. We were tired. I mean, I tell you what, I mean, it really felt like an actual like tour like when I was in a band. Um you know, because we essentially had to network three nights in a row. Um uh first night in Sunnyville was great. It was super packed. Um super super packed. Energy was through the roof. Um met a lot of great folks, man. It was really cool talking AI, talking tech with folks out in the West Coast. Um I just don't get to do it that much. Um, and then the second night, uh, shout out Yugabyte DB.
They were throwing a meet up and Heather Downing, um, she she she tweeted at me, so I stopped in and, uh, obviously got the selfie and and, uh, you know, got to hang out [clears throat] with Yugabyte, uh, DB CMO a little bit and chatted up with him. Maybe some future partnerships coming down the pipe with that. Um, and then the second event in Sunnyville was great. Um, it was fantastic. Uh, you know, I think what was really cool is we're starting to really kind of pull in a lot of the Ronstad Digital uh recruiters, recruiting leads, um, and and and some of the sales people, too.
But, you know, the the the the one thing that's really that that's really apparent and and I've gotten the feedback on is, man, like like th this is different, right? This is different. This is special. Um, and they're saying it. Um, and so again, excited what we're building. So, we're back at home. Back at home. I landed Friday last week. It's my wife's birthday. I was I was gone for my wife's birthday, so that was neat. Um uh but made it up to her. Had a great dinner. Um and then we're back on the road tomorrow for commit code. All right, so that's a recap.
Been busy. TLDDR. TLDDR if you're just now tuning in. Been busy. Also, yes, shout out Fur today. Also, my talk to text has a terrible time with Fur. It calls her Fur like Fur. Um it's Fernanda Fer. Shout out Fur. It's her birthday today. She's fantastic. She is kind of the engine behind all the bookings for our meetups. Um, and then commit your code and then offer two weeks and then we are headed to Buenos, Buenos Arezes, Bueno Arez, Argentina. I'm going to work on my Spanish. 20,000 person conference. A lot of US companies are going to be there. I know Open Code's going to be there.
Michelle has posted about it. Uh, Code Rabbit's going to be there. Um, I think there's some conversations with us in Code Rabbit potentially doing a joint meetup. More to come there. TBD. Um, so a lot going on. It's going to be a heck of a time. Um, and then also finally, if you're in the Raleigh area, uh, September 8th, all things open meet up. Our ambassadors are going to be out there. I'm not going to be there. Some folks from the Ronad Digital team are going to be out there. If you're going to be out there, let me know. I'll make some introductions. Josh Rabel is his name.
He's fantastic. Love him to death. He's in the Raleigh office for Ronad Digital. Um, but it's going to be a great great time. Uh, all right. So, let's get into finally what you're here for. uh which is kind of the AI stuff, right? So, negotiate your offer live, right? Take a real or realistic offer scenario, research comps with Claude, write the counter. Um, all right. So, the prompt, so here, so here's what we're going to do. So, the first prompt here, you know, I'm going to go share I'm going to we're going to go back to share my screen here. Um, share screen. Uh, yeah, 20,000.
It's going to be insane. It is going to be nuts. Um, all right. So, we're going to share my screen here if y'all can see it. I know it's really, really I know it's really All right. So, you see it. All right. So, the first prompt, I'm going to go and throw the first prompt up in here. So, again, this is all fake. I'm not looking. Just got to got to say that people are weird. So, this is the prompt, right? I've received a job offer for a blank role, a blank company in city remote. The offer is blank plus blank. Help me research whether this could this is competitive.
What should I be looking at to understand market rate for this role? What data sources should I check? What factors affect compensation for this type of role? So, I'm going to make this up here, right? So, let's say I received a job offer for a uh community manager role at I'm I'm just going to say I'm going to say a series A uh a recently funded seriesA company that has an AI product. Let's just do that. um company in uh company that is fully remote. Uh the offer, so let's just let's just do offer. Let's just throw out uh let's throw out two throw out 240K.
Um equity bonus if applicable. It's a series A. I I don't know. Uh we're going to have to make this up here. Let's just say let's just say 20K bonus here. Um help me research. All right. So, let's see. Let's see what it does here. Okay. What is wrong with my screen sharing, Jason? What is What is wrong with it? There's nothing wrong with it. Is that better? What's going on? My There's nothing There's nothing wrong with my screen sharing, Jason. There's nothing wrong. All right. So, let's see what comes through here. Also, has anybody noticed Claude is just like really slow lately? What's the actual scope?
Uh, I'm going to go player coach. I'm going to do IC no reports. Um, is there equity? Uh, I'm just going to say have an ask. Um, what do you want out of this, Jason? I'm just giving out random numbers here. What do you want out of this? Uh I I have seen some roles posted for community manager for AI companies at that salary. Uh what do you want out of this? I'm going to do let's do so negotiation script is the second prompt. Let's do full comp analysis here. Let's see what it says. Um also too mic sounds different. Does the mic sound better, Sebastian?
Does the mic sound is it? The mic should sound better. Yeah, I'm running it through uh Well, Jason, that's a Streamyard thing, dude. That's not a that's not a that's a Streamyard thing. Um yeah, I mean, yeah, there's not there's not a lot here. All right, so let's let's let's let's load. God, taking forever here. Um, so we're going to do this. We're going to work it up. Then we're going to get into the counter script. Uh, I'm I'm not going to do the negotiation roleplay just for the sake of time. Um, but I'm going to go through the prompts. Again, I think the biggest thing is the prompting here is the most important part.
Um, and again, if you're not in the Torque Discord, you should log in. Um, you have to have a Torque profile. And I have these prompts saved in the job search content channel. So, all right, man. Taking forever here. Sounds scratchy. Might be. Anybody else think my audio is sounding scratchy? No, it should. That That should be it. You're getting scratchy. Maybe I'm clipping. All right. I turned I turned it down a little bit. I shouldn't be clipping now. Let me know if that's better. I think it's I'm clipping. Check. Check. One, two. Check. All right. It's still loading. It's still loading. If you are listening to this on podcast, I I do apologize.
Let's see here. Come on now. Please help this millennial. Yeah, dude. Yeah, I'm I'm terrible. I'm terrible. Sebastian, I hate hate. You're not going to be at commit your code. I saw your post in the chat. I'm going to miss you. Um, man. All right, while this is loading, let So, let's just continue on with the prompts here. So, um, that sounds better. So, I was probably just clipping is what was happening. So, I'm going to I'm going to take off I'm going to stop sharing my screen for a second and and we're just going to go through while this is loading. I'm just going to share my screen when it comes to the prompts here because that's kind of the most important part.
Anyways, so so, so we just did the market rate research, right? I I I think it's really important. I think AI, I think, could really really help you with with navigating your offers. Um, because you don't know what you don't know, right? And and if you're not running offers through any sort of AI, um, you are uh, absolutely hurting yourself. Yeah, Jared. So, I have this podcast in the app store. So, if you search guidance counselor 2.0, um, uh, you can check that out. Um, all right. So, we got that. Go look up actual data. Uh, so I forgot to look this up, but you can also look this stuff up, too, right?
You want to get a holistic picture of everything. Um, the second thing is a counter offer script. So, I want to counter this offer. Here's what I know. Here's a current offer. Here's the marketing data I found. Here is my target. Here's competing competing offers uh or leverage. write me a counter offer script I can use on a phone call. So, [laughter] I am weary about scripts. I'm weary about scripts. The reason why I'm weary about scripts is because if it doesn't go exactly the way you want the phone call, which it never does, uh you are not you're you're gonna get stumped and you're and it's gonna sound like a script.
So what instead of asking for a script, I would say, "Hey, can you give me highlevel bullet points or things I absolutely must talk about?" I I think that's incredibly important. Um, the next thing is negotiation roleplay. So I would actually use this, right? So this goes back to last week or or or or the last stream I did which is around uh the voice channel, right? If you are not using voice to talk through things on claw chat, GPT, Grock, whatever, you're really missing out on an opportunity to practice interviewing, to practice negotiation, right? Um, you know, a lot of people, I mean, even Seth, right?
So, Seth came to our meetup. Also, I forgot to give Seth his flowers. Shout out Seth, our ambassador. He drove two and a half hours to our event in Sunnyville night, too. It was great to see him. um he got some airtime speaking about our community uh to the talent there as well. So Seth, you're awesome, man. Thank you. Um so, but like Seth posted I think last night on LinkedIn I saw where he was like he was like I didn't quite nail my intro at the community meetup like he specifically said that. And so what I would do is I is is is even going like before going to commit your code, right?
If you are not comfortable about talking to people, I would open up the voice chat on any of your preferred AI tools and be like, "Hey, like I'm about to head to a conference. It's mainly engineers, but there are some hiring managers. Can you talk to me like I'm in the hallway track at a conference? Can you talk to me like I just bumped into you at a conference?" And just use that, right? You know, again, there are there are not a lot of people that can just hop into a channel or hop into a conversation and crush it. Like, and that's okay, right? Like, there's there's only there's only a handful of people that I know that can like no practice, jump into a conference, and just go, right?
Like, you have to think about this stuff like working out, like the gym, right? It right now, I have not worked out like in a year, right? Like, I'm feeling it, too. if I I can't go in tomorrow and deadlift 500 like I used to. Humble brag, right? So, I have to work up to it. I think that's the way you need to think about using AI, right? And and I know Jason may roll his eyes at this, but like everything that you do, be like, can I use AI for this? Right? Can I use, hey, I'm going to a conference tomorrow? Even ask Claude or Chatt, "Hey, I'm going to a conference tomorrow.
What can you help me with?" Right. So again, I think negotiating uh an offer I think is incredibly important because a lot of people and it's okay talking about money is stressful. I get it. But literally like if you are not rehearsing your counter offer conversation, you're going to go in and fail it because the reality of the situation is it's very nerve-wracking. It's it's it people stumble. you talk too much and you know and the normal thing is people just work themselves down right accidentally right so again like like like you really really need to be practicing using AI voice uh and then ask it always hey at the end of this conversation can you can you critique me right talk about the things I've missed on um so uh all right the next thing evaluating total comp I have two offers.
This is another one, right? Offer one, offer two, help me compare total value of each offer beyond just base salary. Right? So, this goes back to week one or two. What are your goals? What do you want out of a company? Right? Uh do you like to work by yourself? Do you like small companies? Do you like big companies? Right? And and this is why it's important to create a project for your job search. um and and and so it keeps all this memory. So then if you have your resume, you have your LinkedIn, you have your must haves for the job search, you have all that information saved in a project and then you're doing this, hey, help me compare, it's going to remember all that information to help you make a good decision, right?
One of the things that I've seen over the course of my 15-year career is people just need to talk to somebody to flesh out these details. That is what AI is here for, right? Um, so really use it. All right, so that's that's all the prompts there. I think it's pretty straightforward this week, right? I think it's pretty straightforward. I do want to go back I do want to go back to uh what Claude shared with me. So, and then and then we will wrap it up here because we're already at time. My wife got me Chick-fil-A. It's sitting next to me on my office and I really want it.
So, so again, right, we we did this report. It's an ICO report. I haven't asked about equity. Can you do the full full comp? Right? So, it ran I we're not going to walk through this, but it but it created a three page document outlining the offer. The short version, 200k cash for an IC manager with no reports is above market average, not marginally. pay I don't know what pave I would assuming that's pay puts VP of marketing base at 252 your base is at 240 for an IC role the broad US medium is 60 to 68 though those aggregators blend property management community managers in so treat them as a floor the only IC ladder that legitimately clears 240 is Google or Nvidia and those uh total comp are heavy stock not base three things three things worth flagging you have not asked about equity got a series A that is the entire asymmetric part of the package.
Um the number being this high means something either the title understates the job or the cash is deliberately buying out equity or they are cashri AI company closing fast. Which one is it? And it changes what you negotiate. That's fantastic. That's a great thing. As an IC title 240 is a ceiling. You cannot get raises outside a band. You are already above and it reads as a step back. Do not push on base. push on equity, the 10-year post-termination exercise window in the title. So, it and then it and then it goes uh and then it quotes all this stuff in the document, right? Just just for giggles.
Let's just pull up the document. Let's just pull up the document. We we we we will end we will end on the document. Hold on real quick. Let me share our screen. All right. So, this this is the document uh that it created. Let me zoom in here so you guys can see it. Okay. Can you guys see it? Okay, let me see here. No, let me let me me can you guys see it now? Uh, let me let me zoom in one more time. All right, so community manager offer. Again, all this is just out of my brain, right? So, short answer goes over what it could mean.
The job title understates. So, these are specific things [clears throat] that you need to drill in on, right? I think a lot of times people take an offer and then they don't have multi they don't have conversations afterwards right and and and I think you need to drill into this stuff right what the market actually pays of course so it goes in here community managers it gives you the baseline it gives you glass door numbers here is your comparison stat here so uh obviously your benchmarks on the lefth hand side your figures in the middle why it matters um why series A can still write this check Right?
It kind of goes over why the gap you have not asked about equity, what standard looks like. It bring it breaks all of this stuff down. Sea level, VP, etc. Uh if there's no equity in this offer, either cash is deliberately buying it out. Um ask these eight numbers on how much equity, number of shares. So, one of the things that I'm kind of confused on just naturally is is shares and equity and stuff. That's kind of my weak spot. Um, and so I really think this is a a great thing to ask. Uh, usually if you're working with a recruiter, you can, you know, package these up in an email and send it to them and they can go out and get the and get that for you.
What actually moves comp for this role? It kind of goes in. I mean, it goes into everything. Scope and leverage, revenue, proximity, company staging, cash, remote pay policy, reporting line, etc. Where to check the data yourself. Uh, high, high, high, medium levels, FYI, low for this role, built-in zip recruiter. Um, it pulls all this stat questions to ask before you say yes. Love this. What does success look like? Who do I report to? Is this community developer facing, customerf facing, brand facing? Do I own the budget? Can I hire on the money? On the company? Just amazing, amazing breakdown on how to navigate offers here.
So again, incredibly incredibly de deep um in terms of uh breakdown on these offers. So anyways, um hope you enjoy this episode. Um again, if you are not using AI every day in some way capacity, uh message me. Let me, you know, I I can always give ideas. If you're going to commit your code, spend 15 minutes this afternoon.
