contract to hire & recruiter ama

aug 2, 2021 · 20 min · hosted by taylor desseyn

key takeaways

  • job seekers should consider contract to hire and pure contract roles as viable paths to permanent positions
  • hiring managers limit candidate pool by only seeking direct hire; expand options to include contract and contract to hire
  • candidates need to ask detailed questions during offer stage and stand up for themselves in negotiations
  • leaders should schedule calendar time to follow up with employees for feedback instead of expecting them to always initiate
  • companies should avoid low-balling offers and getting in their own way with overly strict hiring requirements

It's good to see you as always All right, let's go ahead and get started y'all again. Thank you opportunity in the guidance counselor 2.0 this morning Going live today to talk about all the things contract to hire and recruiters Because at the end of the day we can never talk enough about contracting contract to hire opportunities and also The recruiting industry in general so today is just kind of open Q&A so tee up the questions for me at me Call me. Let me know if you have any questions about contract to hire or recruiters in general But before we get started want to go ahead and again give a quick introduction about why do this the reason why do this is because when COVID hit last year People felt like they were an island people felt alone and what my goal was is to develop this show To where people can To where people can essentially log on See other people commenting slide in those DMs to say hey stew I saw you on Taylor's live show comedy would love to connect with you But also to let people know that you're not alone right to do this session for 10 to 15 minutes every morning Just to give you some sort of tangible piece of advice that you can take without with throughout your day We had guidance counselors in high school.

We had guidance counselors kind of in college But we don't have but we don't have guidance counselors now When we probably need it more than ever and so that's what I'm here That's what this platform is here So thank you all for joining me this morning Had a few people join in key show what's going on. How to bud Glad you feeling better from a COVID key shore? Partique what's going on John first live show John. It's good to see you man Thank you so much for tuning in. I appreciate you a ton Everyone gives shot John Shout out connected him So so again, I also to my team as well Brandon Rave Brandon 78 out's poor design Bianca house Noah Allen Y'all are awesome Thank you so much for everything you do.

They are the engine that drives what kind of I'm doing. So thank you so much Michael hey, shout out Michael Kever. I just saw the post from his his big brother Michael congrats on the new job big dog Very, very excited for you Michael just landed his first dev job So y'all go show him so love connect with Michael slide into his DM's tell him congratulations But Michael again, congratulations buddy to you All right, so a few questions coming in already on TikTok How should employees ask for feedback loops from the boss from your boss from the boss the final level of the boss? So my big thing with employees asking for feedback is you have to drive the conversation Right, I think a lot of times first up a lot of leaders are scared to have radical candor right my boy Gary V talks about it a lot But when it comes to radical candor having the intentional conversations That's incredibly important and a lot of a lot of bosses don't want to have that conversation and so I empower my team at Vaco I empower the individuals I empower the individuals on my team to chase after me to ask how they are doing Right, I think a lot of times leaders in today's world gets gets so Gets so focused right leaders get so focused on what's in front of them that sometimes we forget our team And so I think if you are wanting that direct feedback loop from Your manager you need to go after it so again, TikTok.

Thank you so much for that question again Let me know if you have any more questions comments on recruiters the job market contract to hire etc Few more questions coming in Mamitha Thank you for tuning in. How is a job market right now? What is the impact on Covid's current job market? So I think this is a big one um Covid It what I say has has squeezed has squeezed the toothpaste out of the tube somebody said that the other day I was like ah, that's it. That's the analogy. I've been trying to look for But essentially what covid has done is it has absolutely flipped the entire job market on its head and it is essentially Forced employers to have not not a full remote policy because I but I think a heavy remote policy.

It's We're a moat first We're remote first and then if you want to come into the office or you have these built here We fly you into the office like That's what we'll do But I think for me what what the impact of covid has done is we are in historic hiring levels because what's happened is it's so I did a live show with the guy who runs our office Kyle Allen Like a week or two ago check out my youtube page That at the episode is fantastic But we talked about what is covid has done to the job market in that it's It temporarily paused a lot of the major hiring last year And then so not only are companies having to make up for it last year Then they're hiring for this year So really companies are trying to hire for two years worth in one year and we're at historic levels So that is what covid has done at a super high level from that perspective Um, Michael gain congratulations Haley, it's good to see you.

I saw your DM. I'm gonna get to it go cocks I'm definitely love to help in any way. I can pedrosary Title for guidance and motivation counselor because that's what you are. I appreciate that man. I appreciate that What if your employees do not ask for feedback even though you have put the invite out there? So this is incredibly important. Whoever asked this Um, this is this is very very important important What if your employees do not ask for feedback even though you have put the invite out there? I think as leaders within organizations I think you need to put time on your calendar. You need to set aside time on your calendar To to to make sure that you follow up with your team.

That is incredibly important For me. I think a lot of times With with trying to be a better leader trying to Be a better guidance counselor is I have to be intentional with my calendar right? I think a lot of times people put to do lists Um, together, but they actually don't put it on their calendar so they never complete their to do list And so I think as leaders with the organization I think you need to put an invite under calendar specifically for following up with your team to make sure That they feel seeing they feel heard because that's incredibly important within organizations Be intentional with your time and be intentional with your employees time That is what's gonna change culture Edson go morning.

What's going on? Yes. Good to see you again. Hello from Brazil. I hope you're doing well down there So so I had had a few more questions come in from yesterday's I'm gonna pull up again If you have any questions, please let me know. I would definitely I definitely want to answer those for you this morning. So The the first question is how do I as a senior level consultant at one company for so many years condense a large number of number of client projects And still highlight the fact that I have been renewed multiple times by big name clients. So this individual emailed me From LinkedIn if you're watching, you know who you are Because they're they're testing the waters Right they want to see what's out there.

They understand after watching my life show that that You know the markets move in the markets grooving right and so they want to make sure that they're looking out for themselves Which is why I do this show right this show is I want this show to be a light to others Right to a guidance a guide for others And so this individual has been at the same consulting firm for so long I think the thing is is this individual who messes me I think your big thing is writing your resume And I think your resume actually needs to be relatively long and I think the dates are very important Now when I say relatively long no more than three pages.

I think a resume link needs to be at max three pages But I think it's what you highlight within your resume Right if you've been with this company for multiple years and you've worked on a high product high availability projects high impact projects for big clients You need to highlight those and you need to put in the summary. Hey, listen Hey, listen This is what This is what I've done and they've renewed me multiple times right again The job search resume writing all of it is about storytelling. It's all storytelling It's how you phrase things. It's how you write things. Those are incredibly important Um, you know this individual goes on to say I have a full list of project with the sentence or two From each project at a current player.

That's pretty impressive. But several pages long Should I redact this and offer to potential employers if they're interested? Listen, I would say have all of it on Two to three pages Make it clear make concise if you've been at a company for a very long time And you've worked on a lot of important projects. You have to make sure you're not using buzzwords I mean not buzzwords fluffwords. Those are incredibly important Right you need to take out great communicator or work swell with others. Yeah, no kidding because you've been on a lot of big projects, right? So those those are some questions that have come in.

I also want to talk about Contract contract to hire real fast on a hiring perspective. Listen if you're a hiring major watching this and we're 11 minutes through first off Thank you so much But also to you have to be mindful that if you're an organization right now You're like we're only looking at direct hire candidates. We only want to hire direct hire well, why? Well, that's because we've always done that. We've always done it that way. Okay, do you realize that there are two thirds You're really only looking at two thirds of the are one third or even one fourth of the candidate pool right Taylor?

What are you talking about right? I'll tell you this there's true consulting right we have true consultant like you give me an entire Project and I have development teams that will take that over yes. Yes. I do that. We do that at make-o Right then we have pure contractors. They're probably tell what's the difference right one's project based one is hey We want to keep this consultant on this contractor on for a year or two just to bounce them around Probably will we have a bunch of small projects. We need to bounce them around on We're never going to convert them right. That's a different project Project based versus kind of bouncing around then you have contract to hire then you have direct hire right so technically there are four Options to hire from us and if you sit here as a manager right now This job mark go we only want direct hire cancer then you wonder why you are not getting you are not getting candidates That's why Right right down this job market.

You need to view everything if it's the whole excuse of oh, it's just because of what we've always done No, that excuse doesn't fly anymore. You are falling behind also another thing another another few things That I've seen from companies right now from out from a hiring side company stop getting your own way Stop getting in your own way. I had it how to develop or interview at a company the panel all six of them said yes But two of them didn't say yes And they're not going to hire that candidate Listen, I'm going to say this Stop getting in your own way Right companies are I had another company to the other day another company to the other day Yesterday low ball one of my candidates $10 $15,000 and This cancel jet not just because it's it's my candidate, but he's legit low ball Companies win in the heck are you going to get it?

You can't do that right now Somebody on Twitter tweeted at me's like companies need to do the The the the the highest offer strategy. This is the absolute highest offer We're gonna over offer you this is the best you can do and that's it. This is the best we can do That's it take here leave it, but we're gonna offer over Right right now companies you I don't know I'm gonna keep talking about this until I'm dead or at least just this year we are in unseen territory Where I've never seen this hire before candidates drive everything they can go anywhere they want If you are just if if you legit are just like low-balling or like not offering a candidate because all six people didn't say Yes, the correct way Come on what we doing what we doing?

What we doing? We're low-balling candidates. I just I companies if you're watching this if you're watching this Like don't do that don't do that don't do that. Let's say even if you never use me as a vendor ever Ever I'm giving you free unsolicited advice here. Don't low-ball candidates and Get it and get out of your own way Right so real quick from a job secret side. Take talk. Thank you so much for your comment. Keep it up. I appreciate it Brennan I appreciate man truth Tuesdays. Yeah, I'm trying. I just listen just trying to educate I don't care if you ever use me as a candidate or client I'm gonna sit here for the next 20 years I'm gonna go live every morning and I'm gonna try to tell you how a job seeker and the client can avoid mishaps and if you Continue to make mishaps.

That's on you. I'm sorry. That's your fault Another thing to on a candidate side listen you need to be open all types of employment right now same same as a company side Right I have placed I have placed candidates in a contract contract to higher side And they have found their dream jobs because of it because let's face it even it's a few even if it's a pure contract job If I can get you your pay rate hourly where you need to be at from a base bonus PTO bench time and you're happy with it who cares you're W2 a co I Got you right I've had people do pure contracting with me the client loves them.

They go full-time They go oh my gosh Taylor.

I am so happy that you told me to do this You got to look at everything right now you got to look at everything Pekwita let them know that'll preach amen Edson why you can't even see stream yards got to fix this this is wild tick-tock If you can't see this I pulled up a question in my entire face is covered Edson let's suppose that the HR scheduled one hour for particular interview and for some reason the guy who is interviewing spend 30 minutes more during a 30 year and during the 30 minutes over the can't receive the message from the boss They can't then

tell the interviewer that needs to answer his or her boss for the next step The can it was approved, but the interview is scheduled again for one hour is it okay if the can explain what happened the HR look like To HR looking to avoid the same problem as previous let's let's suppose That the HR scheduled one hour for a particular interview and the and for the some reason the guy who's interviewing spend 30 minutes more during 30 minutes over the can't receive the message from the boss then tell the interviewer that needs to answer his or her boss for the next step The can

it was approved listen this this sounds like this sounds like communication right it sounds like communication Right like companies need to figure it out and you know is it okay for the can to explain what happens to the HR looking to avoid Yeah, absolutely.

I think I think the I think the can it needs the can it needs to it can't needs to speak up The can it needs to speak up right there needs to be constant feedback right I had a candidate email me this morning about some questions They got an offer not through me. They just wanted to use me as a as a resource and he and this can it was like I Just hope I just hope I don't I just hope I don't like think HR is like you know me trying to haggle I'm like listen this is your career. This is your interview. This is about you This is when you need to stand up for yourself.

So job seekers if you're interviewing if you're in the process negotiation Stand up hold hold ground ask all the questions like it's important to ask questions Right I think a lot of times as a job seeker we get we get into interviews and we just get so excited that we got an offer like that That's it. I'm done and we just take the offer then six months later We start the job or six months into the job we're unhappy because we realized we didn't ask questions Right so take the time ask the questions. It's okay. It is okay to draw out the offer stage To make sure that you get your questions answered.

All right. That's all I got today a little hodgepodge today I hope I answered your questions to everybody if you have questions that you want to ask me But you don't want to throw up on the live show.
