We have my business partner and good friend Mary Haynes on this episode. So Mary. Thanks for joining. I appreciate it. So So Mary, I guess first off introduce everybody But in parentheses everybody just about yourself how you got today come and kind of your story. Yeah, so I Made up here working their music industry Wanted to do music publishing Was doing that for a little while and just absolutely hated my life And I had a friend who worked here at Becca and she was always talking about how much she loved her job and she loved where she worked and that her Employer always won, you know best places to work and I was like I need to work there immediately And so It ended up kind of being a long road because you guys didn't have any junior kind of positions For me to hop in on but then whenever VT was growing And you guys were hiring for source series that jumped in and we had a connection and it got a referral and Here I am.
That's awesome. So so how long have you been with Becca now? Three years. That's crazy I literally remember when you hired and just time flies So from so no recruiting background zero all music background. Yeah, and you went to you actually went to build lots to do music to right? Yep, and I've yet to hear you saying in the three years you've worked So I guess tell everybody kind of what you your progress Okay, so you came to Becca through a friend or you know You've and you learned about Becca through your friend and you got hired I guess tell everybody kind of your progression through Becca and kind of how you became a recruiter.
Sure, so Started as a source or so just sourcing resumes, you know calling people out of town So that if I messed up it wouldn't be a big deal And you never messed up And then You know tech times with Taylor Learning learning tech like learning and Googling what is calm or whatever and learning just learning tech words what they meant So no, they mean I just make it up nope And did that for like 10 months and then there was actually a need for Account manager at that point so we shifted slightly out of recruiting and it was supposed to be into recruiting and then shifted into account management And account management I mean we talked about that too I mean there was a lot of plus of the count management as there is with recruiting and it seemed like a pretty good Fifth time and it still was a fit, but you kind of decided that yeah, you kind of missed We're quitting.
Yeah, I needed to do one lane. I need to be doing one thing and the account management was Not built for my personality type and then I decided to have a child Yeah, yeah, and and what is his name? Teddy Teddy is the best and how old is Teddy now he'll be too in January. That's awesome. That's awesome So and then also I put this on record So you can quote me on this Mary was our most successful sorcerer Junior recruiter that we have ever had so of course it made sense to move her In account management so and then how long have you been so I guess tell anybody what you recruit now right and how We're structured here at make out.
Yes, so everyone kind of has their own lane. They kind of stay in so recruit development recruit infrastructure and then some girls who recruit specifically like business side be as pms until I do Specifically development which is what I was trying to do while sourcing so it was a natural fit right in exactly and and so From a development side I guess what areas of focus do you focus on the most? Is there a specific a few languages you focus on so for the people who listen could you obviously reach out to you? So yeah, I mean with natural donet obviously is a huge a huge portion But anything from sequel Java Python we're seeing PHP we're seeing you know JavaScript so I think anything if you code at all we will talk to you Yeah, absolutely and so and then you're pretty involved in the market as well.
So you know I know You help it the JavaScript user group in town They become very fun of you already so from a Obviously this market's kind of crazy and you've learned over the last three years that you know Recruiting is kind of the way to find a job in today's market So I guess in your words right? I mean the whole thing of this podcast years with everybody internally is to get everybody's two cents on Why they should use your recruit or so I'm interested to hear your thoughts? For somebody especially because I mean the last episode was with spin right and so he's been in the market for 20 years He's been a recruiter for 20.
I mean just brings a wealth of knowledge you you've you know College grad came here from music did music found a job in tech per se now So I guess tell everybody like in this market why should you use a recruiter? Definitely so I mean I think that Because we're so in tune with what's going on all across town you know with different companies we have so many different positions that we work on You know we were able to get you involved It's a lot of different positions of a lot of different places But I also think with as many corporate companies as we have now so much of when you submit your resume to a company It's just goes into a black hole, you know, you just go into like a An automated you know you send it through a machine and it's automates, you know a kickback You know, it's like we're able to paint that picture for those for those for those clients now I mean what I mean would you still say you know someone was this like well, I found a job on my own So obviously I don't need to do the recruiter.
I mean I mean I still think it's important to partner at someone You know, it's it's networking. Yeah Not working And actually I'm interested because you brought that up and this is not the script so We will add lip here, but I mean I guess tell me in In your minds because I think we both found out in the last you know few Few months rather that you're pretty introverted as well as I am. I mean it's it's definitely a struggle You know people think you're in sales people think you're extroverted and you're gonna make all these friends and you One and die, but the end of the day you are not crash.
I mean we constantly make jokes about that So I guess I mean talk through networking and how you've kind of I mean you're still learning I'm still learning so tell everybody kind of like I don't know. It's maybe some strategies to network Yeah, put yourself in the center of the room And don't just let them cut you don't say No, I think it's important. I always try and at least make One to two good connections every time that I go somewhere and new connections Yes, so I'm not clumping with people that I know it's so easy to do You get with the other three people that you know that are there and you you know sit in a corner and Talk to each other and it doesn't nothing but that does absolutely nothing And it is uncomfortable, but I feel like everybody is no if you enjoy going and Talking to strangers.
I don't know anybody that enjoys that. I just I you know I think everybody is probably just as uncomfortable And to put in your top off there what are you gonna do? I mean, what's the worst that could happen? You know, tell me say no Yeah, exactly and I feel like I mean I got this job because of a connection that I have Like my connection had a connection that was she wasn't even working the friend of mine That was she wasn't even working at make it anymore She saw a post of a friend who was hiring for BT Told my friend told me I mean that is how I got this job.
Yep, so and and So as someone's a sister like okay, well, that sounds great. I can go to show up at you know one to two Um, you know, you know, I can make friends with one or two people that sounds easy But like where do I find these things like I guess how would you say to find these events? I think it's wherever you are Interested in getting involved at there have been so many people there have been developers that you have worked with You know, I crossfit with that I didn't ask those people Anywhere wherever you go hang out whatever you do if you go to the gym if you go like whatever you do Talk to people there ask them what they do.
There are so many it's so crazy Who he was connected around you. Yeah, it's uh, I can one of the guys I wait with at CrossFit He works with one of our other recruiters and I didn't know he was in tech. Yeah, so It's wow, I mean it's like it's so wild. Yeah, and then and from uh and just from a group meet up perspective What would you recommend? Where can people find? Yeah, so meet up does it meet up calm? I think so. Yeah There's tons. There's so many locally. We host a lot of them here If you need help kind of navigating my reach out to tailor it on myself We we host a lot here at Beiko There's a lot of good information on their website and just kind of see the ones that you're interested in go Go drop in.
Yeah, it's usually free dinner A speaker. Yeah, awesome So it kind of the so Holidays right now Everybody's loading up on carbs and eggnog. Whoo, what's you and I obviously haven't doing at work all of the holiday Food here at Beiko, but so I mean I guess First off, what's your biggest advice for people during the holiday season right now that are Maybe looking around, you know, not super stoked about their jobs, but are happy what I guess what would be some advice that you give them? Through the holiday season. Yeah, just the holiday season that we'll kind of like say for like just in general as well Okay, I would say right now Be thinking getting be getting your resume ready be figuring out looking at companies that you would be interested in working at You know connect with a recruiter ask kind of what the you know feel the market is right now I would stay put through the holiday season You know, I think that a lot of companies from here on out are gonna You know kind of beyond cruise control until January, but I think right now is a really good prep time You know to get your stuff in line gets your resume looking good Like Dan you can't get your damn looking good.
Absolutely. Yeah. No bathroom selfies right? Please no bathroom. I'm sorry. No a good nice professional photo Yeah, and then new year new me Whatever you need to do and wherever you need to go awesome awesome and so and in general Obviously use user recruiter Obviously for the job search, but is there anything else that you would recommend? Just for the job seeker in general networking recruiting Being vocal on on social media LinkedIn. Okay, so I'm interested to ask you right because many people would say Well, I don't know to talk about or I don't know like why should I post stuff on LinkedIn when I have a job?
Right, and so I mean that's another way to network exactly. Yeah. Yeah. Yep. Yep. So I mean so talk about that right so yeah people post hashtag hashtag right I mean casual thing for people to find you um, but you know I mean Talk through. I mean how can you talk me through how to network on LinkedIn? Yeah so I will use my most recent experience with this So here make it there to make some promotional videos and a tailor's done a few I did one Congratulations that I posted that several people you know reposted it and not posted it and I've had Several people message me.
Oh my gosh. That's so great. Can you come speak here? Oh my gosh? We attend this luncheon. Oh my gosh. That's so great that you said that you never know what what you have to say is probably Important to somebody, you know, you never know who's out there listening. So true Um, and it's probably if you're feeling a certain way somebody else probably relates to that. Yeah, and this could go I mean this could go even to you know your work from home mom and have kids and You're really passionate about blueberries. Yeah And you could be posting about blueberries daily on like dim. Yes and It would it would it would it would it would grow It was somebody would be super stoked about blueberries.
So I mean I think it really makes sense and and I mean that's something you would not talk about a lot to right I think I think people are fascinated by people's stories And what their passion about so if you're passionate about something there's gonna be others that are passionate about it So if you continue to post and leverage social media. Yeah, you can start leveraging your network that way So I think that's a great point. Um, so I guess kind of enclosing kind of not but why I guess Why in your words should people Call Vaco to help them in the job search specifically just make goes a whole yeah I the The best part about Vaco for me if you spend five minutes in our bullpen Is you're gonna see every type of person you're gonna see Taylor in a floral shirt.
Yeah, we're gonna see me probably in a sweatshirt You know our our director Alex is probably gonna be you know in a standard dress shirt dress pants I mean you're gonna see it's everyone's personalities They're able to come out in their business how they run their business You're getting you're not getting corporate robots. You're getting real people um, and we're we're able because our founders have you know kind of created that culture here. We're able to um, you know put our personality in our humor and realness into what we do We're gonna be honest with you. We're not gonna sugarcoat stuff And we really do care about helping people.
Yeah, absolutely and and you said one thing that I want to expand on meeting People yes meeting. I mean you would say come in meet with us, right? Absolutely come meet with us If you can't meet if you have to meet some reckless to your office. I will meet you for lunch I will meet you for coffee. I will come to you. I love to eat. We can go wherever you want to go Yeah, but but why is this so important to me as well? Yeah, aside from the food. Yeah, because we just get yes um, yeah, because you get a personal Face to me.
I'm not calling you. You're not a number to me. This isn't something where I want to call and get a five-minute Scope of of your skill so that I can like mask submit you. It's it's relationship building It's we want to be a partner with you through this process. I'm doing a job is not something that is is a light Thing yes, it's serious. Yes, and we understand that And and we want to be your friend and your you know your partner through that So I think yeah definitely meeting and in relationship building and and we're not and you can speak to this too Because I think you do such a great job of this is Take is becoming more of a friend and just a Over crew that you call when you do a job So I mean talk about maybe some other benefits What partnering with the recruiter can have other than just finding a job?
Sure So I had a guy recently that I sent So with Vega we have a box at the bridge then if you ever want to go to a show if you ever want to go to a Prince game, you know We have tickets to that and I think I just sent a guy and he said I didn't realize Like those really cool course I put this podcast out and like everyone's gonna be like I want tickets Yeah, I mean you get lunges with us you get hangouts with us. We take hold. I will do whatever you want to do I would know hangout. Basically a friend for hire.
I don't think that's talked to If you are lonely and a need of a friend, please call baby If you need a boyfriend girlfriend for holidays, I'm sure some of us can Beyond call for that So I guess finally in conclusion. I guess tell tell people how they can find you Sure In Hanes in h a y and e s at vego v a c o.com LinkedIn Mary Hanes Twitter Facebook whatever I love it and then and then and my big question. I asked people is Someone's really stressed at home right now What is the one advice you can give them to calm their nerves and say hey, it's gonna be okay?
What's what's one key advice that you would give? I think that Everybody goes through that at some point You know Everybody struggles with that at some point or another. I know that you're not alone in that big the anxiety of finding a job. Yes Um, and now we are here for you. That's awesome. Well Mary. Thanks again for hanging out with me. I really appreciate it and May be going to eat some snacks. Woohoo. See you girl
