how to tackle the job search with content w/ dan digangi, eng manager
key takeaways
- direct linkedin messages with short notes work better than inmails; reach out across different departments, not just engineering.
- post content about your job search even when it feels uncomfortable; one person seeing it could lead to unexpected opportunities.
- prepare a story bank and accomplishment document before interviews so you can clearly articulate your impact under pressure.
- structure your job search daily with one high-impact task rather than grinding all day without focus or consistency.
- track your accomplishments as you work so you control your narrative and can speak confidently about your value in interviews.

go I'm trying to go live on Instagram too oh which is new yeah Al righty sweet good morning everybody good morning good morning all right got the YouTube notification happy Monday let's see here and this and this good morning everybody good morning good morning see here waiting for it on LinkedIn all right hey we're live we are we are we are doing it this morning good morning everybody happy Monday excited for this episode this is the one episode for the week because uh I'm headed down to render ATL next uh tomorrow tomorrow morning for those of you uh do not know render ATL is think
South by Southwest but super nerdy and in Atlanta right I mean based off my experience going to South by it's very kind of founder kind of you know higher level business e type render ATL is is very very focused on the engineering side so excited to go down there we'll be hosting M seeing a stage I have my name cards I have my name cards uh I actually whatever stage I have I don't know exactly what stage I have but it's a lot of people I don't really know which is good which is good but I'm bummed that I'm not mcing folks that I really
really know um but uh I I I can't announce who they are yet but it'll be a fun stage so uh say hey we love to hear from you um again the reason I tell people say hey this is a networking kind of thing I'm a [ __ ] right so basically show up every morning uh you know drinking your coffee maybe your pajamas uh maybe you're at work um but say hey we'd love to hear from you um and I found out that two people have found jobs um indirectly through this live show which is really really cool so and that had not happened
unless you comment and engage on the show second thing ask questions Dan is a wealth of knowledge what we're going to talk about today is going to be fantastic um and uh and and you know Dan and I again I I don't have set questions and and I always ask my guests like what do you want to talk about so we want to try to deliver as much value as we f easibly can this morning um so we're gonna talk about Dan's job search how content played a part into it and a bunch of other things we excited to dive in here in a minute
um but JC it's good to see you Ryan it's good to see you man wonderful to see yall um let's see here uh they've rearranged my or things so want to give a shout out to of course gunio um for sponsoring the Pod um again if you if you need hiring help we got you um another thing that I want to give a shout out to another one of my partners this morning is endorsed AI uh endorsed AI if you are in a hiring position or recruiter position um the traditional way when you submit resumés is and you get them in a queue it's usually
based off Tim stamp right so like if you submitted your resume uh a long time ago you know it's sorted depending on how the recruiter hireing manager sees it well what endorsed AI does is it basically it gets all that information and then uses Ai and based off your qualifications you plug into the software and spits out your top applicants ranked in order as they are for the job not for the time stamp they come in so check out indors AI pretty cool little feature um and then let's see here Katie it's good to see you as well Mark Barrett got the crew here this
morning again y'all keep commenting but let's go ahead and dive in D let's give the people what they want man who are you what do you do and we'll go from there I'm excited because this time around I have a job that I get to add back in my intruction because last time I didn't have one um yeah absolutely my name is dy gangji uh so I am a recent uh engineering manager at postmark uh I've been working in the management space for like five years 20 years tour Duty and software big on the front end side love user experience and design I also do
a lot of mentoring on the side and yes I recently went through the struggles that is the job search but got myself back to a job and I feel a lot better Taylor I love it I love it yeah ye ah absolutely so uh man let's let's let's talk about um I guess let's just talk about where do you want to start do you want to start about the job search can you give us some overview what worked what didn't um you know and I mean how how long were you laid off for before you found a job give me some of that context yeah
yeah so let's see I've been I've been at the new place now for almost like I think a month and a half uh so I was laid off back in I want to say it was October of last year um so it was at this company in Fortune is called the active campaign really cool company work in the email marketing CRM space um but I work I ended up getting a role at this uh email delivery place uh called postmark within active campaign and to say the least it was it was a rough six months um I posted uh recently about the impact it had
on me and it's funny is I didn't realize and obviously you know you got me into content um and I've been on a break because I've been so busy trying to stay above water but it's interesting to realize how much of my life is like associated with my work identity and when I don't have that it really hurt me a lot more than I realize so while I was trying but at the same time I wasn't because when you get like laid off like or you don't have a job at some level of first year like oh it's a vacation cool and then you're like
oh crud how am I gonna pay these bills but the bills come at you fast when when I was laid off I got you know a little Severance it wasn't great uh but like a little Severance and then the bill started hitting I was like oh [ __ ] I gotta get a job it adds up quick and I will say like even with having like savings and everything it still it still took a good I took a good hit financially and it's it s sucks because you know I don't know it's just you know like having that Comfort like whether if you make a
decent amount of money or you have a decent amount of money saved up it just it got it started going down quickly as I w as paying out bills and it was a hard experience but what I think and I think you actually talked about this when we last had met which I believe was only a little bit after I gone through the layoff if I remember right which is some of the things that I typically had done didn't really like bear fruit which was really like disconcerting I guess because i' never not I always tell you I think I so this is I've built
my career in a way to ride the waves and it was the first time I didn't feel like I could ride the wave at least not as well as I normally did like my surfboard was kind of like chipped on one type of thing sure yeah yeah so like for example uh like a big one and you again because everything I feel like feel like like my my inspiration all the time um is so there's the side of the content was a new thing which we could talk about but like the weird one to me was the networking side I have a stellar Network very
very well connected all sorts of up and down any vertical or horizontal you can think of and I would reach out to people and this is no fault of anyone that that I went to help for was it just I couldn't get it return like I was even struggling to get like the initial calls usually I can get someone on the phone no problem but like I couldn't even get some of those connections or like an auto rejection from or like a really strong referral that really hurt like I was like wow like what is going on and there's always a side you got to
be honest with yourself and say like is it me but I really do think that of course there's always places I can be better whatever it's a competitive market yeah but this Market I mean everything's kind of thrown out the window like the it like it's not I would say right now and kind of what you experience I mean I would say 75 to 80% of the job searching be rejected asn't because of you I hope so or at least I use that to make myself feel better what I'm feeling yeah yeah yeah 100% 100% so so laid off laid off for six months that
Katie comes in you're try adding a new baby yeah I know I totally yes yeah yeah so you know for for me so so laid off for six months you weren't you said you had a chip surfboard was things weren't working quite like they used to um you are having people you know get on the phone you're having a hard time um did you try anything new like can can you kind of maybe talk about maybe some tactics that you did differently or maybe try to Pivot anyway I did actually try something I think I lightly brought this up or like danced around this which
you know we've talked a lot about like even just and I you know I don't like giving generic advice but it did end up it started to work which was I tried something a little different with the LinkedIn messaging um nothing crazy but so a couple of things and I think I've heard you bring this up so one thing I'll say is I will die on the hill that inmails in my opinion are just very low value products from LinkedIn I don't think they work very well like or at least yeah yeah I talked about this on a yeah on a recent episode I think
somebody asked the questions like adding the comment to the LinkedIn connection or an inmail which one's better oh it was my conversation with Aaron um uh Aaron Haron the recruiter former Tesla recruiter um somebody asked that yeah and he said that inails just feel and I feel that way too kind of spammy a little bit or I mean I ignore them pretty quickly especially if it's someone working in the recruiting Talent space it's nothing personal I just you know but it's interesting though because I've always been very big on like typically for a while I would always ignore and now I just feel like hey
I'm I'm not looking right now let's stay connected kind of thing um but in the weird Market I'm responding more than I typically do so you actually said this a lot over the last well since I went through this which is you I think it was there's two things I remember you said if you think before it was like say three months to lock of job down it's at least double or triple that right now and I would easily say that to anyone like I think it's a minimum of six to nine months even for those that have theirselves together like I think there's just
a longer period um but you also have to I think you said was like double or triple your effort too which is whatever you're doing before multiply the amount that you're doing yeah so like for the messaging thing and again this isn't like Earth shattering I reinvented the wheel was so my typical in the past was I would reach out to you know a few Engineers a manager a director VP but usually on the engineering side so what I tried this time was I would pick like three four five people across different parts of the business so I tried someone like I was doing Home
Depot I was really disappointed Home Depot didn't get back to me because I had a good referral there and um wood is also very expensive right now so I was kind of hoping for a hook up there but I reached out to it was uh sales engineering couple product people and then a couple of bosses and I ended up having someone in the sales or try to make a connection for me didn't working out but they made the connection um and then the bigger boss just kind of gave me a hey we don't have that right now type of thing which is totally okay but
they were people that were outside of the engineering orb and so I found that sometimes that going to other parts and looking for even though it's a very cold connection just so you know we've talked like um hey you know I was really interested potentially in something going on over there I was wonder if there's an opportunity um that's a very direct seller or just like hey I'm trying to learn more and you know what's hard for me to say is I couldn't quantify which one works the best but if I say like gave 10 attempts maybe like one to two would work and I
just be like okay the next one I'll go heavier on this version of the message an d this one I'll try the other one see what happens what would your gut say like what do you think work the best learning more or asking about a job asking for a job seem to be the more direct style seem to have worked for me in this case um I know for sure my messages are still not long and the reason is is that so again I really will never brag for LinkedIn on the email in mail front but the if you have the premium subscription you click
connect there's an ad notes that's what I love yes that's it that's it yeah that's it and it's only like 200 characters I think so it forces you to write a very sutin message that's one of the reasons I miss the old Twitter days is when they locked it down to 140 is minus the the editing which drive me crazy still and how works but anyways um is it teaches you to be more succinct in your message and really hit the point and then really instead of playing with like here's message one message two I'm message I'm doing like message one a and one b
and just trying some tweaks and seeing and it's really hard to quantify but it's not necessarily that I need to quantify it I just need to keep trying and try it in the right places more than just get the perfect message together yeah I love that um uh Luke comes in here Luke's the COO of a recruiting company um I agree with both on the ml thing hate getting them so I hate say yeah they need to LinkedIn is never going to watch this show but anybody at LinkedIn if you ever come across this you need to from a from a look and feel uiux
perspective which I know Dan you're very passionate about um you need to make basically the inmails a not scream the name inmail and then two have the look and feel of just a normal DM like I like I don't know why you're making it seem like not native to the platform so um uh so yeah again always try to put the request in the note yeah most emails I get are spammed so again yeah just the way people are conditioned to like receive inmails always send the notes um uh so it's interesting you said obviously getting straight to the point is important feels like that
move the needle a little bit more love that also love what you said kind of reaching out to other people part of the organization I think that's good as well um are there anything else uh that that you can kind of um rack your brain before we kind of get into com content side let's see uh I will say uh this is maybe not so much like creating the connection but if you are getting the calls or the interviews and stuff um it definitely seems harder right now because there's so much competition and you know I just I felt like I had to spent more
time preparing myself when I did my interviews like I feel very confident about my skills in that area and I have the experience to back it up you're very articulate like one of the reason why I love going live with you is you just you're a yapper I love a good yapper you know is that what people think of me I'm like like that little dog that everyone's like oh can use we like you but you not do that that much no no stop Mo that way B um I like I said so I definitely felt like I had to over prepare more than I
typically do and I am an over preparer um the referrals thing is definitely part of the like so yeah you know I'm trying to remember who told me this I think there my friend gab Ricard told me this is um he was talking to someone who got hired at one of the bigger companies whatever it was and they were like yeah but we picked this person from like 15 internal referrals so if you think like 500 people coming into a standard application and then you're fighting not like a few good refer or a few connections that people have to someone inal 15 like you're not
in a good spot which is why I always say like the you do the direct applications because it's a tax that you do and quantity has value in some ways although it's not the best way I agree but at the same time you know like it I think it further proves like you do have to take some of these other tactics and of course networking and content could be two of those ways that help you get it going and you know that content did play a role here for me getting this job and the story is pretty fun yeah yeah so so let's go let's
talk about content I know people are like Taylor I'm so sick and tired of you bringing on people who talk about content the job search but folks it works that's why I keep doing it so um so Dan talk about it talk about what happened talk about your post all jazz yeah so I will say up front and you know this I bothered you I bothered Jason um taures um I'm surprised hopped in yet I bothered both you guys about the content thing because I think even you guys are both like just post it just post it and eventually I did a video and I
posted after 800 retakes and terrible lighting it couldn't anyways it was it was a mess there's wires everywhere but I did finally just post something and I'll talk about what they were but it got a lot more attention than I expected in a good way like LinkedIn got a ton uh Twitter started showing it and I wasn't really going for that more so just putting myself out there to break the comfort zone which took a push from you too which really got me there um but I think it was my no it was my first video actually so my first video I did was about
my layoff and it's not about the company it's not about anything about that it's about how it affected me personally and professionally how you know again my work identity is very important to me now here's the fun quick story what happened so so about three months ago when I got laid off my dad was like Dan you've got to have health insurance wouldn't stop bugging me about it but I'm like I don't want to spend $8,000 a month on COBRA it's insane not not doing it and he decided to put my name out there and my phone number willingly to an insurance site thinking it
was like Obamacare or something and it went to a lead generation service so if you all d on't know how lead gen works when they pay for the lead they're not paying for your business they're paying for the chance to get your business those people are paying 56 just to talk to me because I seem like a high potential to buy insurance based on whatever factors so I'm getting 50 60 70 calls a day from unknown numbers for it still happens but three months ago is that many a day right so what do you do send her to voicemail send her to voicemail but they
usually don't leave a voicemail right then about a month and a half ago it's about Monday it's like five o'clock and I get a call and it's from like Indiana not a state I usually get and I'm like ah whatever I throw to voicemail and not 10 seconds later I get a text I get a LinkedIn message and I get a voicemail and it's the CTO um of active campaign who who laid me off before and they just said can you talk and I freaked out I was like oh my God am I in trouble for this video that I posted what did I do
that is a very vague I'd be freaked out too can you talk and when I went through the layoff it was kind of a similar situation and generally I have anxiety so I was kind of freaking out and all I did was call him back turns out they had someone that put in their res for part of active Campaign which is called postmark which is our under the hood uh email delivery and transactional service and they're like hey are you still looking I'm like oh do you know someone that's like hiring he's like no no I'm hiring we have we have we had this come
up and the reason this all ties together is if I'm not mistaken so the CTO got reached out from my VP of engineering um and said I think he saw if I'm not mistaken he saw my video that situation came up and both those kind of came together right place right time and that's how I ended up going through very quickly to get this job at postmark under active campaign and it was all from spam call scaring the hell out of me that's crazy man and again I mean I think like that's wh y I'm so passionate about documenting your job search or posting about
it and and also what you do as well because you know obviously at gunio you know I'm helping a lot with branding and and and top of the funnel awareness and and all that stuff and and I feel like in today's market that's really the only way to really cut through the noise it's either referrals or posting content documenting your job search because you never you just don't know who's watching I mean you just you just don't because of everything you don't know if somebody shared it and then some other person saw it and so that's why it's so important um to obviously post this
content didn't know you followup thoughts on that I have a adjacent analogy I just want to throw there really quick so if you work in engineering or if you think about security stuff a lot of people say like oh that won't happen like it's a small thing it won't happen and so the reason I say this I think it's interesting is when you think about security and Engineering it only takes one bad actor to do something really malicious and I was thinking it you said this before which is it only takes one video or one person or one something to see it and something to
come out of it so it's not about I need a million views it's about the one person that hears it and is impacted and hears what you're saying and what you're putting out there that can make a huge difference and I'm very confident to say that this had an impact on my ability to go get this job or to make this connection happen I really do so so let me ask you this putting putting IR feet to the fire a little bit here if you were to get laid off again would would would you probably uh dive into this content immediately oh yeah for sure
the only reason I haven't is you know like anything when you start a new job it's a fire hose and I just need to make sure that you know you can imagine I have a lot of anxiety not that they lay me off again but just the fact that it happene d like it just sits in the back of your head you know so like I am going to start doing content again I just I wanted to make a couple months I know it's Steve told me many times it's consistency doing it I just right now my brain is in one place which is my
work and then keeping the rest of my life going and I want to layer things back in because as you know I'm pretty notorious for berno yeah no absolutely absolutely um can you can you talk to people who maybe um obviously struggling with putting out content or I mean obviously you know you've talked about your struggle with getting you know started and and I mean what I mean can you give any piece of advice for folks yeah I mean the one is what you like I said you and Jason push me as one just do something and get it out there um my you know
I wasn't really sure about what to do and I knew I wanted to be in like sometime somewhere in the engineering space and I've always liked the technical leadership stuff I do think coding is cool it's a bit oversaturated and I think there's a little bit of blandness in that market right now but it wasn't really what I wanted to do because my passion's people leadership technical leadership um so one is just try something so like for me in when I picked it was just what's like the number one thing that keeps floating the top of my head right now it's my job search but
more so the impact that I've had not having a job and I ran with that and it worked out really well I did a couple other videos they didn't really hit as much but then again I'm so new to it I don't think it's necessarily they weren't good or the Right audience it's just I just started so find something you're interested in or just try it even like do an introdu actually so you know my first one was it was going to be just a straightup introduction video about myself just to get my name out there say who I am what's going on what I'm
looking for and that was it just just something I'm comfortable with which becaus e I've introduced myself how many hell how many times in my life you know but sometimes it's picking something that you can get yourself comfortable with because you know it and then the other side just pushing yourself be like the world's not going to end if this isn't the prettiest highest quality best content video ever but you're getting yourself out there and it takes one step out to get many steps coming yeah absolutely um LinkedIn E I started doing content on YouTube I think that's enough motivation for me to do more
content I love it I love it um is there anything Dan kind of going back to the interviews or just even how you structured your day-to-day I'm all about kind of like trying to pull out of the Tactical stuff not the Tactical but like more of the life stuff is there anything that you tried to keep consistent in your six months did you hold yourself to a schedule I mean talk talk about that you asked me this last time when we were on um and again I was think it was like a month and I'll be honest I was not my normal self when I
was hunting I think I was a little bit um trying to think of the word uh not spoiled I guess I don't feel like spoiled is the right word but I honestly didn't try as hard as I should have and it's more of a do as I say not as I do type of thing which is sure sure what I said before is like because of like my my style of working like if I'm too structured I won't I won't stick with it if I'm too unstructured nothing gets done or ADHD all over the place which I do have ADH for the record um which
does not make this easier um but what I did eventually is I was kind of like getting the finances was what finally kind of sparked me to get going a little bit more again which was I would just try and do something we talk about which is every day I would put a few hours and I pick a specific task that I would do and then I would get it done it was as just doing like the quantity direct applies other days it was maybe like an hour or tw o on the resume um I did the LinkedIn messaging thing where i' split that up
so I would say if it's definitely you want to have some structure just I subscribe not to overdo it because again it can get over overwhelming like put your time in put the effort in but I would say pick one really important thing every day that actually move or most likely to move the needle forward because that's the thing that's interesting right you don't always know what will move the needle forward which is why you got to think what are those top three things that could do it and is that where I should spend my time probably yes yeah yeah absolutely what um what did
you do um when it came to balancing interviews or or or even better question did you feel yourself missing the marketall in any interviews like did you was there a common theme of maybe you messing up stuff or not diving into like like was there any sort of themes you know there's only one thing that I feel like I'm gonna think in the background was in saying this but one that one that I found and this is something and so this will be kind of not just what we're talking about but a general like Career Development advice for those is like from a mentoring coaching
perspective is so when I interviewed back uh Netflix once upon a time a few times um when I heard how they do their interviews I realized like I can't just like purely off of my memory like just belt out my stories and experiences and accomplishments so I ended up building this document that has like it's got like my story bang questions they ask to align to their values but especially like different projects that I've AC you know successfully like done XYZ on and so and so what I found in some of the interviews and I think this got me was I would either bring up
something that I didn't remember enough details to speak to it or i' never actually like had it in a document that I could go to and be like here's my story Bank of the things that I've done and I can use those to show my skills and then align them to the job so one of the places actually and I'm actually kind of glad because they're um not my favorite companies which is uh StubHub um and I like going to tickets and concerts but for how much they charge if they hear that you guys got to stop charging people so much it's insane what you
anyways um but they came up was it was around migrating react um and using like Federated modules and migrating off angular and I had done that but I couldn't remember the details enough and when they drilled into it I didn't have it offand and ready to go so here's my advice to people is build your story build your bank have those things it's okay to have that in the background just like if you said hey is it okay if I take notes same thing to be like hey I have this thing it's just to kind of give me some notes it's okay there's nothing wrong
with that it would never just let know the front end yeah yeah exactly and so I wish I had those pieces so to go with that is you know whether you're hunting right now or you're at your job and I tell my entire team this if you want to develop your career track your accomplishments you are the driver of your career write down what you're doing write down what you're getting done what's moving the needle forward one so that when you have those conversations for compensation and they you want to get a bunch of money and the promotions you have that story but then also
when you're looking for the next jobs you have the story to go with who you are and why they should hire you yeah I did something like that a little bit too when I was on the search I created a um for me it was like a one it was almost a one it was like a one a marketing one pager like here's what I've accomplished here's what I've done here's what I can add value to organization and also my comp history I added my comp history um uh just to like set the bar from the get-go and so then they could have that entire
information in fron t of them through the interview process so so there would be no like aha type situations right and for me that actually helped kind of break down a lot of kind of awkward conversations around comp um you know and and you know my background it kind of solved a lot of stuff so I'm a big fan of that I always tell people like have your resume in front of you like a pen and paper like I literally have pen like like on my desk um you know have your Sizzle right so that's not not who you are but your Sizzle is is
like hey like here's what I've done type situation so again I think I think all those are incredible and just let the interviewer like hey I have I have a pen if you see me writing but and and and you know if you see me look off I I just have a document up because then if you don't say that then it kind of gets a little awkward for the interviewer um I just assume I assume someone's on slack if they're not paying attention to me which I've seen meant too many interviewers do oh yeah 100% 100% um a lot of comments have just come
in let's see here such an inspiring story um creating comp for the right person versus every person yeah 100% know your audience um let's see here Mel my guy coming in track your accomplishment so important um let's see here um B comes in here totally agree uh with recording these stories I was once asked about a project I really was passionate about um but I realized I still forgotten so many details yeah it just happens it just happens um you know our brains um you just have to condition yourself and you have to write this stuff down um when you track your accomplishments you control
the narrative able to articulate your impact and added value yes 100% 100% all right we're already at time I knew that was going to happen um Dan any any more final thoughts words of encouragement for folks on the job search right now uh keep trying I know it's a rough time but don't give up um and remember like there's a side of trying new things and there s ide of trying to improve what you're doing like don't be you know don't hold yourself back from taking a step back to see like maybe I'm not doing XYZ as good as I could have quality is definitely
more important right now networking content are big ones but there is a side of qu quantity as well that's not where your main stage should be but there is a sense of value and quantity and how you apply and do things last two quick ones would be if you've been out of a job for a while you're you know is this more so if you've had a job and have ear experiences uh prepare for getting back to work as you start to close in in a job I felt a little bit overwhelmed because I haven't worked for six months officially and it was a rhythm
to get back into and now that I'm getting my mojo back I feel better but get yourself ready as you start to close in um and then last is continue to you know build relationships talk to people get yourself out there I know it's cliche it's stereotypical answer but it really is a big difference and plus getting to know people are awesome go to render ATL go meet Taylor to gun.io Virtual event something like there's so many ways to get out there and connect with people keep doing it oh and my Shameless plug is I am doing a little hiring over at postmarket active campaign
if anyone's looking hit me up on LinkedIn there you go there you go you heard it you heard you heard it here um yeah keep trying yeah I mean list it's so hard in this market right now it can really beat you down so just just one one step forward a day for sure um all right Dan as always last uh kind of Rapid Fire before I got a bounce uh four questions first off uh if if if I told you wake up tomorrow morning you can't do anything in Tech anymore but I'll give you the same style you're at now what what would you
do oh I'd go be a designer you I do UI designer all day no don't count no no not in Tech not in Tech uh not in Tech um I would oh man I honestly don't know I love Tech uh u h uh sales no I'm terrible at that I don't know the good answer it's not fair all right well there you go you need to work on this get text me if you think about text me um second thing is um uh what do you umh what do you like to do outside of work for fun uh now that it's summer and it's warming
